my dad did that to his rrc. he put the locks hinges the other way (both sides) but bought a thin stripe of metal that ran ago the tailgate (the lock switch fits in).

try spraying some pb blister on the strikers and dont unscrew all the way. might just be rusted alittle.

I adjusted the internal rod and now the hatch stays closed! It works. Thanks again to everyone here for your suggestions. It looks like the current tailgate has some life to it after all.......
