The thing is with Premium, it is a slower burning fuel, hence why our Rover motors have a low RPM range, from 0-4500 RPM in that vicinity.
Slower the burn in this kinda motor, the better the efficiency. 87 octane burns faster, and the cylinders aren't designed for that fast of a burn. You'd possibly run into drivability issues, with carbon deposits building up. I run anywhere from 91-93 octane, as the ratings vary from state to state, like MI, and OH. I used to run 87, when I first got my truck, and had horid gas mileage, and lack of power on acceleration. Once I was told to go to Premium fuel, it made a hell of a difference like night and day. Also, there is other factors for gas mileage, and engine efficiency for power as well. Ignition timing, spark plug gaps, how clean your IAC motor is, the list keeps going on and on. ![]()
