Gragraver - I have a flowmaster series 70 on my RRC and it sounds great. The muffler is directly underneath the truck with no rear resonator. I had a local muffler guy just bend up some tubing and ran it out the back where it's supposed to. It got a little louder with the catco cats that are in there now. Sounds mellow at idle, but when you get on it, it has a nice tone. Not American V8 grumble, but unique to Rovers. Apparently the firing order of the rover V8s cause it to sound different than an American V8, even though they're pretty much the same engine. I also went with the series 70 over the 50 due to resonance inside the cabin. I didn't want a lot of drone inside, since it is my DD.
I'm used to loud exhausts however, since I've got a loud exhaust on my M3 and also a valve to go straight pipe on it. It is also SC'd, which makes it a little louder, especially under load. I've always loved the Audi Allroad, was thinking about one myself, but I'm a bimmer guy. Nice to see other people here mod their other cars as much as I do.

funrover, thanks for the compliments on the audi. not really trying to get you in trouble with your fiance. the look on her face when I opened it up was funny though.
HaroldC, the way you describe the series 70 with resonator delete is pretty much the sound I am going for. Any idea what the flowmaster costs? also, the M3 is a great choice. we have an '01 330i (needed the extra doors) and I often crave the extra power from that M motor. nothing wrong with a BMW though, they are very fun to drive.

I'll sell you the rusty muffler on my Classic. The pipe going in has a nice gap all around it.
A nice throaty sound, though not as nice as when I bough it with an Edelbrock and K&N. Nothing like the sound of a carb sucking to go along with the exhaust.![]() ![]() ![]()

I have a Borla exhaust on a 1995 LWB, and it sounds OK. Everybody complains about it droning on the highway, though. My 1987 just has the rear muffler off of the tailpipe, and has only the centre muffler, and it doesn't sound too much different from the Borla. The 40 series Flowmasters are really loud, in my opinion. The 70 series don't sound too bad, though. Whatever you do, you shouldn't expect big block sound from the Rover engine. They just sound too smooth. I suppose if you installed a pretty radical cam, you might get something a little different, but I have a 4.0 block with a pretty decent cam in a Classic, and it still sounds pretty normal. I would guess that you will end up with some version of Flowmaster, given what you are looking for, if I was betting on it.

I prefer the Magnaflow over the Flowmaster, but its not going to sound as mean as what you are describing you want. The Magnaflow is a bit mellower sound(less chance of it droning in the cab as well), but I think its a better muffler performance wise than the Flowmaster, but if you are not going to do anything else to the engine then it does not really matter. If you just want it for sound, go with the Flowmaster.

I get some British Thunder from an oversized tip. I bought the truck with it . she really rumbles!!! and the rest of the exhaust is stock
i can see the land rover logo stamped into the metal. just a thought & a cheap way to produce the desired acoustics. opened flow systems are nice but i'm too frugal. |

Flowmaster detla 40 muffler sounds great, but the shop did a shitty job so mine is straight piped right now, do not straight pipe a classic!! Only thing that sounds good with no muffler or cat is my 500hp diesel, got to love the turbo sound

for a nice growl, rig electric wiring to desired location in your truck, throw a lion iside your truck then piss him off, then every time you wanna hear a loud growl hit the power button on your electric wiring thus shocking the kitty and voila.... a nice deep growl.
or do what I did, a cherry bomb after the "y" pipe in stead of inter muffler and a twin out-put borla rear muffler. it was an experiment and I thought it would sound too chevy or redneck but instead it came out very bmw gurgle tipe almost m type at all rpms, in fact when I off road and hit it really hard and then let off the throtle it has a low grunt back fire. I may add I have 2.5 inch pipes all the way thru, the y pipe is from a 2000 series II disco with custom welded bongs for the classic. I think the power gain is psycho-samatic just because someone mentioned I would get more power out of that installation. |

If your on a budget then just cut off the rear muffler and run a pipe the last two feet. I did it on mine mostly because I trimmed up the rear body panels, but it sounds gnarly.
