So after putting off replacing it and putting off replacing it, my water pump finally died the other day. I'm considering replacing the radiator, cowling, fan, thermostat, viscous clutch, hoses, belts and oh, what the heck, my alternator too.
Or not. Before I drop all of this cash into my truck, is there any way that I can tell if any damage was done after the water pump went out? I drove it for about ten minutes after it went. No stop and go, just a nice 40 mph cruise home to avoid a tow. The temp gauge never went up, but since coolant wasn't circulating I guess it wouldn't. I've started it up and moved it around my house (which is about a total of 300 yards) and it ran fine, no smoke or anything. In a nutshell, how do I determine if anything warped from the heat before I spend $$$ to install a new cooling system?

If the temp didn't go up...you didn't operate the heads in a too hot environment.

You may not have hurt anything. Yes, it is possible to warp an aluminum head while the temp gauge isn't yet in the red, but I've been lucky in that I haven't warped one yet in the four failed water pumps and two head gasket failures I've experienced over the years in aluminum engines. Mind you, only one of these failed water pumps was in our Range Rover. You may be OK. Just replace the water pump and see how you do.
Are all those systems really failing on your truck? Even the fan cowl? I've never heard of a fan cowl wearing out. Scott |

As far as I know it's just the water pump that has crapped out on me. But as long as I have all that other stuff off I figured I may as well go ahead and replace them with new parts instead of waiting for them all to go bad one at a time. Plus my alternator has been surging for awhile, so it's in need of replacing anyway.
And I appreciate the advice, guys. I didn't think that I had done any damage, but I just wanted to hear someone else agree with me before I hit the "complete order" button. My UPS guy is going to hate me.
