Exclamation What are my options? I overheated the engine!!!

The Rover:
Range Rover
1993
SWB
County

Well, I'm a sophomore at BAMA and my friends and I had taken a trip to Kentucky and we were almost home when I noticed my temp gauge beat the right side of it's half-circle range. I immediately pulled over but it was too late. I had it towed back home and my dad says "if it was a horse, we'd shoot it." So what are my options? I know of three:
1) New engine (which, we bought the rover on ebay for $3,250, so it'd probably be cheaper to buy another rover in this case?)
2) Used engine (my dad said he got a quote for $1500)
3) Engine conversion (I've heard of people swappin chevy engines and you can buy a 250hp chevy for around $1300, but what's the conversion entail?)

ANY AND ALL HELP/ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Garrett

Okay, so you drove the vehicle till it overheated. Did it totally run out of coolant? When you say you had to get it towed, had the engine seized? More info is required before a proper diagnosis can be made. BTW, forget the Chevy option, the conversion will cost you heaps more than just buying a cheap engine.

well, I pulled to the side of the road and white smoke was wafting from under the clamshell hood. coolant was runnin out the right side (down the tire) it looked as if it was coming from the reserve tank. a guy pulled over when I did and said that he had been tryin to get me to pull over cause he noticed water coming from my exhaust pipe. it wouldn't crank when I tried to recrank it but once it was towed home my dad said it cranked up. what had happened was the belt to my waterpump stuck and it stopped the water pump. that's all I know. THANKS AGAIN FOR ANY AND ALL HELP!

If you water coming out your tailpipe I'd say that engine is toast....I'd either get the $1500 used or build up a 4.6!!! Me personally I am going to build up a 4.6 so I have more power and still have the rover set up...

If you can still turn the engine over by hand, it's possible that the heads are just warped; gaskets will be toast as well. If this is the case, the bores need to be cleared of coolant ASAP, before the rings seize to the bore (an oil change would also be in order). Any ideas as to what caused to the overheat to begin with? - what ever the case the heads should be pulled off the block to anylize the extent of the damage before you make a final decision.

I'm overlooking things here.. with a pure and simple overheat, it would be worth it to strip the heads and see what you got going on inside (I.E no galling on the bores). I would bet that you can fix your rig by having the heads decked, and installing a new head gasket set and water pump. Your probably looking at less than $400 in parts. Good luck.

I agree with scuffdog, the RV8 is a tough nut and would imagine at worst its done the head gaskets we cook these all the time trialling,
I doubt the pistons will have picked up on the liners get the heads resurfaced and stick it back together

if i am not wrong it is the same engine as the one u have unless u have a 4.2..
if u have a 4.2 with this one u will notice change in power.....
and i feel the price is fairly high for a motor that has 92k+ miles on it...

4.2 came in the LWB not SWB.

Yes it is the same engine.

If that engine runs and is intact, it's probably a good price. We got my 4.2 from a burned LWB from a salvage yard. It was an interior fire. We just stripped off the bits that were melted and slapped new gaskets on it.
I had more than $500 in just hoses and gasket sets for it.
