I am getting ready to go for a 500 mile trip in the classic. She is running great. I got some hoses, duct tape, w-d40, belts, manuals, real basic stuff. Names of Indie Rover garages on the way.
Checked the fluids, belts, tires, battery etc. What would do you guys keep as spares/tools or what would do you pack for for road-trips in your classics for longer, highway trips? What RRC things tend to go kaput on a longer highway drives? Thanks for input. Just wanna "be prepared". ![]() |

Curious also as to what everyone carries for cross country trips. Planning one for Darth Vader in a few weeks so any responses are appreciated in advance.

Funny about the triple a premium card. A couple years back I had an incident, I was on the jersey turnpike when the tranny went in my ford explorer. I called triple A and they wouldn't pick me up because I was on the highway. They said I needed to be 100 feet off of the exit in order to be picked up and gave me another number to call. Strange policy.
A couple months back I broke down in brooklyn. I called t-a and they came to get me (I was more than 100 feet off of the BQE exit). I asked the driver of the truck about the 100 feet policy and why triple a can't pick me up if I break down on a highway. He told me that especially along the Jersey Turnpike and around highways in the New York area, the towing company that has a contract with the highways is all mobbed up and that is why there is this strange arrangement. So while the card is a great investment and has certainly paid for itself, it doesn't cover you as fully as I believed it would in what would seem like a standard situation where you would be covered. Badda bing. |

Only four 100 mile tows? What are the parameters? I've been AAA Premium for years and never noticed that provision... Gotta read the fine print now (assuming I can find the silly fine print!)

Tom,
Four free 100 mile tows per member. So, that means you and your wife have a total of eight within a twelve month period. Benny, I was in Elmhurst, Quees the other day and used my membership with another roadside service company to remove a truck I had just bought. The first towing company to respond was a local one. They called me up and said they had been notified of my need for a tow by my roadside assistance company. The dispatcher then went on to list all the incidental charges that would need to be paid for in advance. The total for my 72 mile "free" tow was $350! Needless to say, I hung up. Within seconds of getting off the phone with the dispatcher, her boss called to recommend that I simply have the truck towed into their shop so that they could fix whatever was wrong with it. (There wasn't anything wrong with it besides it not being registered.) I can only imagine what kind of bill I would have gotten if I had let them get their hands on the truck! In the end I got a tow from a local (to me) towing company and the truck was back at the shop by that evening with no additional charges. |

As long as it's within a 12 month period, I'm cool... Funny how you never read the fine print until/unless you need it and what you thought you were getting wasn't what was or would be offered! That said, I've never had an issue with CT AAA - when the tranny let go in my RRC last fall, they about fell over themselves to get to me quickly and even called the local PD as my wife had said I'd broken down in an intersection. However, about 9 years ago, they sent someone to Shelton to change my wife's flat tire (8.75 months pregnant at the time) when she was in Weston....oops.

AAA+ is one of the best things ever. that said, I carry a set of standard tools (metric and sae wrenches, 1/2" 3/8", and 1/4" socket set, pliers, wire crimper, channel locks, vice grips, and an adjustable) a propane torch, multi-meter, assorted wire ends, a hack saw, tie-wraps, a spare long side rear shaft, spare cv-joint, 4 qts oil, 2 qts at fluid (trans and power steering), 2+ gallons coolant, small bottle brake fluid (almost never see gtlma at the service center), wd-40, pb blaster, carb/choke cleaner, spare bulbs, extra fuses, extra tire stems, the bolt in kind, and a good book for my girlfriend.
deppending on the trip, i also keep 5 gal of potable water and a minimum of 5 gal extra fuel. just a road trip? prob not necessary. in winter, i keep a blanket, sleeping bag, and spare food. Most of these items i have used/needed at some point. Mike

Cell Phone numbers of your friends who will pick you up if you break down.
![]() Just kidding of course. The basic tools plus a box knife for cutting any hoses that my fail near the end of the hose. I like an old blanket to lay on in case the road is hot enough to fry eggs and to keep the basic dirt off my clothes. I had a small air compressor on board but i've only used it like four times in 8 years one of those times was for a bicycle tire. Toss some of those neoprene surgical gloves I told you to buy in the back. Just in case you do work on it you won't get your hands too dirty. I look forward to your call...when are you leaving again? ![]() |
