I bought a 1996 Disco yesterday, and it was running great on the way home, and most of the day. It started having a little flutter sometimes, not always, while at a stop light. Well I took it to the store, and when I came out and went to start it, it was hard to start, and would die if I let off the gas, I drove it back home and adjusted the idle up, and it does not die now, but the check engine light is on. Also I wanted to clean the battery terminals, and disconnected the battery and the radio now wants a code to work. The company I bought it from has no clue what the code is, and I called LandRover and they gave me a code but it did not work, any clues?
Um... I had the same problem with my 96 Disco. The place I bought it from had do idea what the code is, so I ended up going to Circuit City and getting a new radio. The factory radio had a cassette player, so its not like it wasn't do for an upgrade anyway.
I'm looking at my factory stereo that I just had yanked out of my vehicle. There isn't a code anywhere on it, BUT Circuit City said that they could reset or check it for $50 bucks, so I'd let them call the company and try to figure it out and if they don't, well, don't pay them.
You adjusted the idle? Why? If it worked fine before, and didnt work all of a sudden, do you think it COULD be a part failure, not a adjsutment? I bet your check engine light is on. The computer is confused.
You can backyard Bob the adjustment after you correct the failed part. But, your computer has a small window of what it calls acceptable.
The only way to accurately adjust base idle on gems engine is with a Testbook.
Radio Code.... Each radio has a different code. Did you pull it out and give the dealer your Serial Number? They CAN look it up from that.
I had to prove to the dealer that I was the owner and they provided me with the radio code and it worked. I did pull a Car Fax report for $30.00 before I bought it and knew what dealer had been used in it's life. It's a good report to have if you want a history of your car. I now have have 2 '96 Discos, but will sell one later.
As for the radio code not working, somebody more then likely tried to enter the code in to many times. It only allows you to try a few times before locking up. The code you got from LR should be correct, but if I remember right you have to leave your key in the 2nd position for something like 30 mins to rest the system and then you can enter the correct code into the radio. Atleast that is what I had to do for the radio to work in my 97 Disco.
