1996 Land Rover Discovery
Cant shift out of park. No brake lights and Turning Signals not working. I think it maybe the brake switch. Is there anyway to test it? How do you tell if its bad or not? Is the turning signals not working might be related to brake switch. For a while the AntiLock light was on. Then One day while I was driving I noticed the turning signals did not work. Then I parked the vehicle and when I tried to start it back up 10 minutes later I could not shift from Park. I read all the posts and it seems the Brake Light switch is the culprit. I tried the trick to get it out of park but it didnt work for me. Can anyone elaborate how to "trick" it so I can shift it out of park? Also I read some posts that said I can use a jumper to get the antilock codes. Can I use a paper clip as the jumper and what exactly am I jumping? Any pictures or detailed explanations would be much obliged. Last edited by umoms : 11-09-2007 at 07:34 AM. Reason: Changed |

Your brake light switch is causing your problem. If you need to drive the truck, run a jumper wire from the rear window defroster to the 3rd brake light connector. Turn on your rear defroster, step on the brakes, start your engine shift into drive and turn off the defroster. The power from the defroster will activate the shift solenoid allowing you to shift.
Get a new brake light, only takes a couple minutes to replace it. Mike |

I forgot to mention I just recently replaced my driver side tail lamp. Could this have something to do with this issue?
DiscoMike: Would the brake light switch also cause the turning signals not to work? Also where exactly is the rear window defroster and the 3rd brake light connectors located. Thanks. Last edited by umoms : 11-09-2007 at 09:28 AM. |

I bought a new brake light switch and a new flasher and it didn't resolve this. I know the original flasher is working because it controls the hazards and my hazards are working fine.
If I jump the rear defroster and 3rd brake light, I can shift fine. If I jump the 2 wires in the brake light switch connector I can shift fine and I get brake lights that stay on. I do not get any turning signals but hazards work. I checked all wirings and fuses and everything seems legit. This happened only after i replaced the rear passenger side bulb and installed a new battery. Any other ideas? Last edited by umoms : 11-14-2007 at 06:47 PM. |

you should check the light switch on the steeringwheel my lights wouldnt work either so i took the switch apart and saw that the contacts shorted. So i used some fine grit sand paper or a dremel wire brush would be fine to and cleaned the contacts and then put some grease on them to keep everything moving smoothly. That stopped my problem this might not be your problem but it doesnt hurt to check it out. THere are also light fuses inthe engine bay fuse box as well I think they are under "sidemarker" or "sidelight" or something like that if that 15amp fuse is blown that effects the turn lights as well. Happy hunting
