Default 1997 Discovery Issue

OK. I have a 1997 Disco XD that all on it's on would just Kill itself after coming to a stop. Then would not even turnover not a budge, no sounds nothing. After about 10/15 min it starts up a little rough then dies, then cranks over just fine as if nothing happened. This has happened a year ago and I replaced the fuel pump, spark-plug wires and valve job. Since then this is the first time it's happened. I have been told to look at the ground.

Any ideas? Where is the ground for the beast?

Thanks everyone for all you help.

Try not laughing too hard...

Khan: Do I understand you that after replacing the fuel pump, plug wires and having a valve job (expensive), your Disco ran fine for a year and now quit again? What actually did the problem turn out to be a year ago? Was it the fuel pump - it wasn't the valves surely!
Are the symptoms now identical to a year ago?
If the problem is electrical, it could be a ground (there are many electrical grounds, any of which could be loose, broken or corroded); it could be the ignition switch or a bad wire...
May I recommend you find a really good Independent mechanic who is good a diagnosing electrical problems. A good Indy Land Rover shop will have tons of used parts so they can replace components (if necessary) and isolate the problem. Then get the mechanic to put that part in new. This type of work can be labour intensive, but a skilled techie should find the problem quickly.
Cheers and best of luck.

pavel,
Yes it's true I had all that work completed and thinking on it also included cleaning out the ignition switch as well (it was pretty dirty). A buddy of mine who has a 95 Disco recommended the same, that I look at the ground since his had the same issue. I traced my ground the other day, cleaned out the contact points and so far no problems. I will look into replacing the ground cable with a newer one in a few days.

As to sending my Disco to an Indy for an electrical looksie I am going to have to do that as well. I will more than likely send it to Will Tillery since I know he is God's Land Rover rep here on earth and exorcising demons from rigs is his thing.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Peace

Khan: glad to here your Disco is running OK. So to clarify: it was a bad ground wire at the ignition switch or are you refering to the ground wire from the engine to the chassis?

pavel,
What I did was clean off the grounding cable from the negative post on the battery and followed it back to the chassis. I cleaned the connection to the frame there as well.

So far so good. Keeping fingers crossed, lol

Thanks again for your time and help.
