Default £ 6225 repair quote!!! - Help!

Hello, I have logged onto the forum to see if anyone has any ideas for a cheaper option for repairing my front axel.

I found an oil leak, which has been caused by a split running from the diff right along the axel case - just under the weld, to the end of the axel. This crack is about 450 mm long!. Nobody who has looked at it seems to have any ideasother than the local land rover dealer - who have quoted me £ 6225. I have been advised not to drive it far, and live in Cambridge UK.

Thanks.

So you are being quoted $10k US to replace the front axle???? Sounds way WAY too high!

How about having the axle degreased and let a good welding shop weld the crack? I believe it can be welded and reinforced pretty easily.

Default How much ! ! !

Hi,

Wow !

What model/year Disco do you have ?

£6225 ? even if the axle was unrepairable that seems a kind of high quote

Exactly my feelings, remeber this is a LR main dealer with main dealer labour costs.

Thanks, this is something I have thought about, but not knowing too much about welding was unsure how effective it would be.

The quote is for a whole new front axel assy. I think LR imagine there is damage to the axel as well as the cover!

Exclamation Ahhhhhhhh

Hi,

I would change the axle case.

If the axle is actually damaged then you could try places like equicar ? and the salvage merchants in the monthly Landy mags.

I've even seen axles for sale on Ebay at good prices.

Depends what work you would take on

Try a Landy garage thats not a dealer they'll probably sort things out a lot cheaper than 6K

Good luck

Jim

£6k + for an axle is quite absurd. I would suggest that you buy a copy of one of the several excellent Land Rover specialist magazines and peruse the adverts. Land Rover Owner International, Land Rover World and Land Rover Enthusiast are all avaialable at high street newsagents.

The quote you have received is almost more than the car is worth. I beleive tha the axles are cast, so welding can be tricky. You would probably be better off getting a whole replacement unit from a breaker.

Changing the front axle is not as daunting as you might at first assume. You will need a ball joint splitter and perhaps a 4" angle grinder if the radius arm bolts have corroded onto the bush sleeves.

Support the chassis on axle stands, unbolt everything with the wheels on and roll it away. Swap the wheels and roll the new on into place. I would also suggest investing in Haynes Manual 3016 which covers the Disco 200 & 300 Tdi. Even if yours is a V8, this will not affect the undercarriage.

Default Leaking Axle Housing

I would still suggest that you not try to stimulate the economy all by your self. Why buy a new axle housing assembly when you can have it welded. Welding is part of how they are made in the first place and I have been in a number of shops where they cut or add to the housing all the time by welding.

Default Welding

It is possible to weld axel casing an is often done on competition trucks to add strength. I would ensure that the person doing the repairwork has done similar repairs or gusseting work previously as to much uneven heat can warp the axel housing. And here I was thinking that landrover parts are expensive here in Aus.

Default Replacing axle casing

I once bought a complete 24 spline front axle for 150 GBP, with halfshafts, diff and hubs complete from a breaker.

When you decide to clean and paint the axle, replace all seals and inspect bearings and replace if necessary , it will be a lot less than 6000 quid !!!

I dont think 300 series are uncommon now to breakers although I think the 200 could well be the same , there are a couple of breakers on the web all depending where you are try these for starters ,
http://www.4x4web.co.uk/links.html#breakers
I am pretty certain you could get a secondhand one and have it fitted for way less than you have been quoted .
PS: you havent been quoted for a gold plated one have you :p ?
