There is a ticking noise coming from the engine of my '95 Discovery.
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what it might be before I take it in to be diagnosed. I'm new to the forum, and it's great to be here - very informative, great site. - Mike |

Mike,
I had a similar issue with my '95 . The cause was the ligher oil that was used when the weather warmed up. It would tick after the engine warmed up particuarly at idle. I changed out to a heavier oil, 5/50 or 20/50 synthetic and the tick went away. When I picked up the rover the origianl owner had 5/30 synthetic but it was in cold weather. Once it warmed up it was just too thin. That was 2 yrs ago, no problems since switching oil. I hope that helps. KF |

Common problem with the 95's. The 3.9L motor has an issue with the rocker arms. When they start to wear, they get just enough "play" in them to cause a tick. It's nothing to be real worried about, but can be fixed.
Some people have luck by just re-torquing the rocker shaft assembly. Just pull the valve covers (they prolly leak anyway, right), and re-toque the bolts. Worse case, you need a new rocker assembly set. You can pick them up pretty cheep used, <100.00. Or, as mentioned, add thicker oil to cover the problem up.... |

Right now, she has 68,669 miles.
I just bought it last week, and it probably hasn't been driven in a while. I only have a 60-day engine/transmission warranty. But I also want to be able to work on it myself. I changed the oil and put 10W-30 synthetic blend. Should I have used full synthetic? I'll retorque the rocker shaft assembly. How many foot-lbs should the rocker arm assembly be torqued to? I really appreciate it, Mike |
