Looking at a 96 D1 w/ 82k. No body damage, but a little faded (red). All appears to be ok at this point...any suggestions what to look for in a pre-buy inspection? Not a heck of alot of service records avalilable, but it has been locally owned for the last several years. THanks for your help.

Can you, and is the seller willing to take it to a quality shop for a once over? Tell them you're planning to buy it. They should give it a good check, fluids, electrics, tires/ hoses, compression. They may be nit-picky, but you'll see big future problems if they exist.

I would look at the floors and frame for any rott. look at the alignment of all the doors and hood to see that they are good and look at the bottom of the pillar between both doors for rott in the corners (big issue).
As for engine, drivetrain and tranny, Let the engine come to temp and see what happens. Look and smell for radiator fluid and oil. Check the power steering pump area for leaks. Check the tranny by putting it in drive and allowing it to shift thru the gears with steady pressure on the accellerator. (normal driving) looking for shift delay (feels like a minor stall between gears) and listen for any mechanical noises thru the rest of the drivetrain. Chances are they will be on either end of the drive shaft easy fix. check the shocks and spring for excessive wear (body rolling whil turning) and front brakes at 80+ K miles are mostlikely needed. Lastly, make sure you engage the diff lock to see that it is working. Most of these D1's were given to soccer moms who never engaged the diff hence, the linkage is shot and will need attention at a minimum. Hope this helped... Post some pics of the D1 if you buy it so we can see. |

Thanks-I appreciate the advice. I did take it too a British specialist (Morgan, LR, A-H,ect) and he spent an hour going over it and test driving. Pointed out a few things that I knew, and several I didnt. CDL had frozen up from lack of use, but an easy fix, motor/drive train was strong, had a SD badge although it was an SE7 (possible re-paint/rearend collision?) Cruise not working, would need a PS hose kit, top radiator hose had a pin hole, and what appeared to be a bearing going bad in the AC comp clutch, or idler pulley. Overall, time well spent.
But again, thanks for the help. Greg |
