Default 96 Diff Lock and low ratio stick

I was just wondering I was out in the snow the other day and tried to put it in low and lock the diff but the stick soon as I tried to move it just kinda floated so I messed with it and it seems that it went into low ratio now I cant get it out and I have brought it to a shop and they said theres nothing connecting it to the gear box. Just wondering if any one else has had this problem before ? And maybe how to avoid it happening again.

Thanks

96 Disco

I don't think I have ever heard of anyone loosing their linkage, I think that is a first.
