Default 96 Disco 1, where is the fuel temp sensor located?

Hey all- I've got a 96 Disco 1 with 178,000 miles. Put about 30k on it this year alone, along with a new water pump, O2 sensors, etc, all of the other things you'd think in a LR of this vintage. She runs great (knock on wood) but i'm having some hot starting issues and am replacing the Fuel Temperature Sensor.

So my question. In laymens terms, can anyone tell me where this sensor actually is?

Thanks in advance.

The engine fuel temperature sensor is located in the
rail on the RH side of the ram housing.

Are you sure it isn't on the left side of the engine?

After you replace the fuel temp sensor, you may want to pick up a crankshaft position sensor ($75 or so) as that is more often the reason for not restarting after warmed up.

It's progressive, it'll get harder to restart (hot)over time, after cooldown, often starts & runs great.

Both of mine suffered this two years apart.

Driver's side of engine, below exh manifold, covered by shield.

Default Thanks

So it's down there somewhere, I'll find it.

I'm doing this and cleaning the throttle body this weekend, it's filthy.

Thanks for the heads up on the crankshaft position sensor...

The fuel temp sensor is indeed on the LEFT side, threaded into the fuel rail just ahead of where it runs beneath the plenum. This can be removed with no fuel loss, the sensor does not actually contact the fuel.

While you are cleaning the throttle body it would be a good idea to remove the IAC and clean the pintle, and the seat in the plenum/throttle body. The IAC is held by 2 tiny bolts, 4.5mm socket IIRC. Be careful not to break them when you reinstall the IAC.

The crank sensor is $56 from Autozone, genuine part in a Duralast box. To change it you'll need a 7mm socket. Remove the UPPER bolt which holds the cover also, then unplug the sensor and remove the LOWER bolt. Reverse this to install the new one.

Default wasn't it

Well, I've got a new fuel temp sensor, but apparently that wasn't it, still having hot starting issues. It is on the left side, just in from the front of the engine. And no, you don't need to depressurize the fuel system to replace it. The biggest challenge was when the plastic housing of the old one pretty much deteriorated when I tried to remove it, had to use the good old vice grips to get it out of there...

I am going to hit Autozone on my way home, it's close enough that I should be able to restart once I pick up the part. I noticed Atlantic British has them for $56.95, but with shipping and how long it takes them to actually get stuff out the door, I don't have the time. I guess i'm going to have to replace this one from underneath? I'll find it. The Rave manual says you don't need to depressurize for this one either?

According to the Rave manual, "The crankshaft position sensor is the most important sensor on the engine." Maybe I should have started there!

Thanks everyone for the help, I will let you know what happens. I took some pictures of the location, etc, but am having upload issues. I'll try again later...

OK, replaced the crankshaft position sensor and still having issues. Got it at Autozone for $56.70, fyi. I'm out of my league witht he fuel pressure stuff, looks like it's going to the mechanic unless anyone has any other ideas? Drives like a dream, no other issues, except the starting when hot issue...

Your saying your having Hot starting issues what is the issue. It wont crank or it wont fire but will crank. Have you check your fuel pressure and any of the basic things like wiring ect?

Same here...hot starts are rough or it wont start. Bucking and sputtering when its hot...worse over time.

Fuel temp sensor is cheap, drivers side on the fuel rail, if it is bad enough it should throw a code for it.
