In an effort to figure out why my 96 Disco runs like crap (bogs down or chokes) until I stomp on it a couple of times when my VSS (brand new) is plugged in and runs like a dream when it is unplugged I bought an Actron 9180that will display and record real time data. Also, after one of these episodes it doesn't want to start. Cranks but won't catch unless I flood it. Once it does start it will start again fine as long as the VSS is unplugged. Otherwise it goes into the same bog down-won't start cycle.
I've cleaned the stepper motor. I've recently put on 4 new O2 sensors. The catalytic converter is only about 5000 miles old. Same with spark plugs. My question really is...if I capture drive cycles with or without any codes showing up what is there I can compare my readings to? What's normal and what's out of range? I have one set of frame by frame output with the VSS plugged in and I'm going to record another with it not plugged. Let me know. Thanks Len |

Most of the time I don't have any codes but when I do they are misfire codes similar to those associated with a bad VSS. That's why I replaced it thinking it would take care of the problem.
Have you also run without the VSS plugged in? Just curious. Thanks |

I think I've screwed up the stepper motor. Is it supposed to self adjust once you turn the key? I've had it out several times and screwed it in and out.
The not starting part only happened after too many adjustments and I completely lost track of where I started. Probably shouldn't have but I was turning the allen screw above the stepper motor too. What is the starting point for these two things (please don't say the starting point is before I touched it at all!) I still have the whole vss thing going on. Runs good unplugged-runs like crap plugged in! Can someone give me some help with the stepper motor? Thanks |
