Default 98 Disco Died on me (i'm stuck)

Ok so I've been doing lots of reading on this site and others, now its time to really figure it out. I have a 98 Disco, was running perfectly, right as I was moving from WV to MD, all packed up and everything, my truck died slowly going up a slight hill on the property. I tried to start it and it would start, but then putter out really quick. Tried starting it a while later and this time less of a putter and still nothing. Had a friend stand in the back of the truck to see if they could hear the fuel pump engaging, and nothing. So I think it may be the pump, but dont want to get into that if unnecessary. I'm fairly new to fixing everything up but still getting it done. I have the rave manual. Things I've done or know to check just dont know how - check fuel multifunction relay, changed fuel fitler, check fuel pressure (dont really know how to do that). Found out today to possibly check schraeder valve. So doing that after posting this. I checked inertia switch, all seemed fine there the button felt a little lose but I think that's normal, not sure though. Need to check crankshaft sensor not sure how to check though, so anything will be helpful. Ok let me know if you need anymore info, will take pics if you need too. I'm stuck on a property with no water until I get out of here, been here 3 days already sigh. Thanks for all your help.

How many miles on it? Check the nipple on your fuel rail (looks like a tire air valve, passenger side of plenum) to see if there is any fuel pressure and if none it is your pump. Pump is very easy to access, cover plate is under carpet/padding in back, right above fuel tank. Might just be a burned wire/connector.

Ok checked the nipple on the fuel rail and nothing came out at all. But keep in mind that I just changed the fuel filter and also have atleast disconnected the fuel pump would that make a difference? I could easily reconnect the fuel pump, I was just going to take it out and replace it but didn't want to begin that yet unless its where the problem is. I haven't taken the fuel pump out yet b/c I need a pipe strap or something to remove it. So I need to go get one of those.

I'm a little confused. Yes, disconnecting the pump will effect fuel delivery like you'll not have any with it disconnected. No, changing the inline fuel filter will not effect delivery unless you crimped one of the lines somehow. To knock the ring loose you can use a long blunt screw driver and a hammer to *gently* tap the ring around. Hell, you can probably turn it by hand if you get a good enough grip on it. No need for a pipe strap.

Edit: I think I understand that you had taken pressure off the fuel line when you replaced the filter. If you did that after it quit then you'll not have pressure if you haven't tried to start it again. If you have tried to start it then you should have pressure because the pump is supposed to come on when you switch the ignition to the second position. Always comes on at that position, always. If you're not hearing it then it's time to take a look at it. Pump can be replaced without needing a new housing too.

Let me just clarify - It stalled out, wont start, changed fuel filter, still nothing. Was ready to replace fuel pump went and began that project. Than I check the fuel rail nipple and no pressure. I'm going to plug the fuel pump back in real quick, try to start, well let the gas prime if it does and then check the nipple. My question was would disconnecting the pump make no pressure in that fuel railv or does that pressure stay in the lines even if you just disconnect the wires from the pump. But either way it doesn't matter, I'm going to check now. We'll see if its the pump. Thanks for your time.

Got it. Yes, you would have no pressure at the rail if that's the case. No problem with time, it's my day off, I have all the time it takes to sort this out with you.

Just to add my 2 cents...

Make sure you get the right model fuel pump for your '98, the model changed at some point with the advanced evap system. Check you VIN number to be 100% sure you get the right one!

Ok so I ended up changing the pump, just bought a pump replacement off of ebay for 60 bucks. Problems I ran into were getting the whole fuel pump container out, this was relieved by put a small screw driver into the side at direct east, just where there is a extra mold there, tapped it down and kind of coasted it up. Then I took apart the pump, had to cut the fuel tube off of the old pump - impossible to pull off, so I cut it off as close as possible and then put it over the new pump tube and tighten the clamp. So I did all that, started right up. I've finally left wv and now up in northern nj. Truck running good, except rear drivers side brake is making alot of noise, so now onto that problem. Thanks for all the help.

Glad to hear it worked out well in the end. I'm at the same point you were minus the "started right up" part
