Default 98 Disco Electrical Problems

Just bought a 98 Disco and the first night the dash lights are not working. Also my fog lights do not work and neither does the horn. Is it just a fuse or something worse? I know these trucks have bad electrical problems. I am hoping this doesn't turn into a CF after just purchasing it. By the way I purchased it from a private seller. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Ian

Have you checked the fuses yet? You don't say in your post. I would check there first. Let us know.

I checked the fuses and there doesn't seem to be any that are blown. In addition, all of the instruments are functioning, they just do not illuminate with the headlights. How difficult is it to remove the instrument cluster? How many bulbs are located within it? How easy is it to change them?

I have also just discovered that I cannot open the tailgate. I had it open a few times but I went to open it and it won't even unlatch from the inside or the outside and yes I made sure it was unlocked. The handles operate and the lock turns freely but the door will not open. Could the childproof lock somehow be preventing the door from opening? Can I gain access to the lock mechanism by removing the panel on the inside of the door?

its possible i just fixed a ford expedition back door because the child proof latch was loose and would hang up causing the lock to stop the door latch from being released.

Are you sure you checked the right fuses?? This has happened on my 97 Disco and it was a blown fuse. It would happen when I turned the fog lights on because of a short in the wire going to the fog lights. If I turned on the fog lights they would work for a short time and then I would lose the dash lights, and my brake lights. I would double check the fuse again just to be safe. As for the rear door try what was posted above with the WD-40

Well I had it checked out by my personal mechanic and he fixed the dash lights because of a bad ground. However I bought this car knowing that the power locks and the anti-theft do not work. My mechanic said that he thinks because an aftermarket head unit was installed by someone that didn't know what they were doing and half assed it they shorted some wires or something for the horn, the locks, and the anti-theft. The private seller who sold it to me said nothing of the horn not working and I never bothered to check it out. I know shame on me but at least tell me its not working thats just not right. So three 110 amp fuses have been taken out of the car. My mechanic put them back in and the car would not start. I now have to get the auto theft system reset by the dealer and work out the locks and the horn so I can get this thing inspected. Oy vey.

So it turns out that there was a short in my glove box and that is what was causing the horn, locks, and anti-theft to not work. All it cost me was a hundred bucks which is nice. However there is a short in the fog lights and if I press that button again everything else is going to short out. If I want to fix the fog lights its gonna be another 400 bucks. So I'll hold that off till another day. Just glad to have a horn and auto locks back.

Also, check the fuses under the hood as well...not just the use panel under the steering column.

I had the same problem where my fog lights would short out the dash lights and everything else, just do not use them any more.
