Default Abs

[size=3]Hi

I am concerned that the ABS warning light on my 1998 Disco (V8, auto trans) comes on on an intermittant basis. At times, when I turn off the ignition and then restart the car, it stays off.

Further, a couple of occasion where I have been slowing to a corner,. or behind other cars at lights, with the brakes lightly applied, the car shudders - like the ABS is trying to activate.

My dealer has checked that car and advises that as per the computer test there is nothing wrong. He has cleaned the sensors, so he advises, but that there is nothing wrong.

If that is the case, why is the light coming on from time to time??? And what about that shuddering?? Any ideas anyone???

Thanks

either a abs sensor or possibly a loose bearing. and even a loose needle bearing inside the swivel ball.

but without codes its not easy to diag.

Trust me i got one now. Basically and open circuit or intermitten circuit means the sensor. IF it is a large airgap code then its either the sensor is pushing out from time to time or its a mechanical problem.

Id like to diag for you but with no codes its impossible to go anywhere. The only thing you can do is too look at the mechanical side of the things.

Ive got the same thing going on with my truck...got my ABS light on, and when comming when slowing down on the off-ramps, i get the shudder as well. Also happens when I'm parking. If I pull in making a left turn and applying the brakes, it'll shudder, but I've narrowed that down to being the cable that shifts back, and upon left turns, it gets tight and stressed.

Same thing here, 98 Disco with ABS light on... off... on again. Turn (even slowly) to the left while applying the brake and the ABS starts pumping.

Default More!!!!

... and we have now found that on occasion, when stopping and putting the auto trans into Park, a similar shudder occurs. Would there/could there be a connection in all this??

I value all comments and advice.

Thanks

I used to have (knock on wood) a lot of abs problems, pretty much everything described above. I replaced the oil in the swivels (was a bit low) and now my abs light mysteriously stays off. This just happened last weekend. I have '95 with the oil in the swivels, not the grease. Oil level was a bit low in the swivels.

I didn't touch anything else down there, including the abs sensor, so I'm a bit at a loss as the reason for the "fix", but I'm glad I ddin't break down and buy the $700 worth of sensors the blink codes told me I needed (rear harness and front left sensor).

Thanks, I'll check them swivels too!

I have also noticed a gadget attached to the fuse box cover on the driver's side under the steering wheel. There is a light which comes on when the brakes are applied - the light flashes the. I am not sure what this box is. Could it be linked to t
he problem???

Thanks

.. and ... how does one check the levels of grease/oil on the swivels?? I note myhandbook says use 90 grade oil.

Thanks

I don't know if this may be part of it, but I have a 97 and the ABS light was on. I didn't particularly notice the shudder, but had it diagnosed and the ABS pump and sensors were all fine. It was just a low cost relay under the passenger side dash. I have a Land Rover repair CD (bought off of ebay) and it has photos so that you can tell which one. After I replaced it, the light went away, but does come on for a short period when I first start the vehicle. The brakes seem fine now, though. Hope that helps.

Wade, was the light on intermittantly or all the time. I have the same light, no shudder though. Except, if I start driving with a turn and use the brakes sparingly, the light does not come on.
