Default Alarm Fob question

Alright, so I am getting sick of opening my doors with my key. It wouldn't be so bad if I could open any door, but if I don't open the driver's door first, the alarm goes off. So I figured I would break down and buy an alarm remote. Have a '98 so I know I have to get the 2 button, but do I really have to have a dealer program it? Anyway to do it myself or you think a stereo shop that installs alarms might be able to? Thanks

20 bucks isn't bad. Did it cost you a ton to have the thing programmed?

no, nothing wrong with the circuit or anything, the cover broke, i drove over it :S good thing the circuit board and crap didn't break so i just swapped out the cover for the new one. Buttons didn't work too well with all the duct tape on it Though i think the going rate to get it reprogrammed depends on how nice the service person is... heard anywhere from from to $70
take care

I took a round about way of doing it.

1. Bought one used on ebay ($20)
2. Bought a new plastic shell for it from roverconnection.com ($15)
3. Dealer quoted me 50 bucks to prgram it, just haven't set up an appointment yet.

Total: $85

Doesn't sound like I took the best route, but I herd buying a brand new one from the dealer is close to $100 plus the $50 to program.
