Default Alpine Windows... ???

Hi again... I'm still trying to learn about my new (to me) '97 Land Rover, (and trying to convince myself that I should like it), and I keep finding odd things to ask about...

I last asked about the automatic 4-way flashers... Thanks to all who responded.

In this case, does anyone know the thinking behind the one transparent and the other translucent "Alpine Windows"?

Oh, and can anyone describe the function of the barbell weight that is attached to the front dif.?

Alpine windows....... You can see if you are a rear passenger. increased visability,, ETC ETC ETC..

The "BARBELL" is like a harmonic balancer for the axle, smooths out the ride, takes away the road shock, and just gives the rover a better ride overall!

The side with the inner plastic is there to provide a channel for the rear air conditioning to reach the vents right over the back seats. It is not present on Disco's without rear air.

Thanks... So I take it that BOTH sides are supposed to be transparent...

On mine, you can see through the single lense, but not the driver side...

However, it is so uniform in it's fogginess that I assumed it was that way on purpose.

I'm not quite sure about what you mean. On the driver's side, the inner plastic window is there to provide the duct work for the rear A/C unit. The plastic should be transparent as should be the outer glass. On the right side there is only the glass Alpine window. Maybe your're inner plastic has dulled over the years.

Yep... That must be it... You can't see through it at all. But it is VERY even, and didn't look like it was just dulled or clouded... It actually looked to me like it was made that way. (I just couldn't figure out what those Brit engineers were up to!)

I'll just limit my driving to southward in the mornings, and northward in the afternoons, and I'll tell folks that it is a special option to keep the bright sun out and minimize the effects on global warming.

jmeyert4a: You have it! Your Disco is clearly one of the extremely rare 'Limited Series' that are designed only to be driven around a prescribed route each day - in one direction. This limited series was designed exclusively for HRH Queen Elizabeth and other members of the House of Windsor. You will remember the term: "POSH" which was used to similarly describe a special sea-travel route (Port side Out, Starboard Home) when voyaging from Britain to India and back.
When and if you decide to let your new steed go, this feature "DOPC" (Driver's side Opaque, Passenger side Clear) can be used on eBay to jack up the reserve price.

Thank you for that... I was beginning to wonder if this forum was devoid of humor. (Not this particular thread, but, say for instance, the subject of lockers/limited slip...)

Regards, the future e-bay listing, that may happen sooner rather than later if I can't find something fixable that causes my truck to drive so bloody awful!
