alternators burn up

I bought this 1995 discovery and the alternator was new, but went bad after a couple miles. I replaced the alternator, and it lasted a few hundred miles, then cooked the battery set off the alarm buned up the mass air flow, and melted the front of the fuse box in the engine bay. I am wondering if it is wired wrong. There are 4 posts on the back of the alternator B+,D+,W,S what color wires go where. If someone could look at there alternator, and tell me what wires go where, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have three wires on my alt (also 95 D1).

1. Battery - thicker wire

2. can't remember where it goes

3. Tach

I belive the thick red wire goes on top to B+
The brown goes to D+
Where does the white wire go? W or S

On my truck it goes to the Tach W.

If you notice on one of the alts the S is covered, that's from my 95 D1. The other alt is from my 96 D1, but I don't remember what gets plugged into S. Sorry.
