Default Another diff lock problem

Hi from sunny NZ.

I have an anoying problem with my centre diff lock in that I cannot get it to engage. I have the centre console off and the lever and mechanism is all working fine. When I move the lever to the left the mechanism shifts the small lever on top of the transfer case to the right. When I jack up any road wheel it turns freely proving the diff lock is not working.

I guess it must be a problem in the transfer box.

Any advice would be greatfully recieved.

Thanks.

How do mate? Right is this a new truck to you? do you know if it has been offroaded before? the reason I ask is that these symptoms are classic for a transferbox that has never been put in to difflock ever! the sliding mechanism tends to seize up with lack of use, which is why people on a weekely (or better daily) basis should cycle though all the gears to keep them all lubricated!

Check out this site! should help you!

Good luck

Ojay,
You might want to take it off road and put a few miles on it, it may free up and start working. If that is the case, then I would suggest you engage it once a month to keep everything working.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks to you all for getting back to me. The Disco is a 1996 V8 Auto. The problem is not with the transfer/ diff lock/ hi low lever as all this works fine. Does any know how it all works inside the transfer case and would some thing daft like an oil change solve the problem.

Thanks once again.

I can't imagine that changing the oil would help correct the problem. Have you checked the fluid level?
I still think you need to go drive it and try engaging while rooling under 5 MPH.
Then get back to us.

Default old rover dude

The lock in the t-box shifts with a spring loaded slide, It wont always lock or unlock right away, I've seen vehicles that need to be driven a few miles before the diff lock light goes on or off, Its just the way it works.
And dont ever lock it on dry pavement , it will fail with a bang !
Also the lock only locks the center diff, if you jack up 1 wheel the open rear will allow that wheel to spin, Land Rover felt that the superior axel articulation would keep all the wheels gripping.
to find out if its locked, jack up all 4,put the trans in N and try to turn the driveshafts in different directions,if its open the will turn in different directions, locked they turn together.possibly your lamp just ant lighting
traction control would be the ultimate fix in later vehicles.

Default Thank you.

Thanks to you all, in particular Disco Mike. I drove on shingle roads for about 10 Ks pulling and pushing in and out of diff lock and the light illuminated. It works a treat now so I can look forward to the ski-ing season.
