Anyone Have This Problem At Local Stores?

everytime i go to AutoZone or Kragen for little things, and they ask for my information (97 disco) it pops up in their computer that i have a 3.9...which i dont, i have the 4.0 engine..so i always have to tell them i have a 98 instead for their computers sake...but didnt they start making the 4.0 in 96? my buddy's 96 is a 3.9 though also...but i've seen 96's with 4.0's..anyhow..anyone else have this problem?

Their database is either Canadian , Aussie, or English. Only 4.0 in the US. I don't have that problem with PepBoys or other auto stores in the NYC area.

Maybe you should shoot off a couple of letters to the main offices.

I live about an hour from you and I don't have that problem with CrapZone or Kragen. Whenever they punch up my 96 D1, it comes up as a 4.0.

i used to be a manager at autozone.. our computers sucked.. lucky for me i knew the rover group well.....i was the only person to get the right parts for rovers... there were 6 AZ stores here... a lot of counter help is a joke anymore..if you have questions i'll try to help

Check out the look on the clerk's face when shopping for parts for a vehicle that doesn't exist in their database. (Now, Land Rover...who makes that...Jeep? No? Toyota?) You can usually get by if you know what cross references to an MGB or TR-6, but that's only good for electrickery.
Thankfully, places like RN, AB, BritPac and RDS are there for those of us silly enough to drive series trucks around...

AutoZone, PepBoys, what's that? You mean that there are computers installed in the part shops in your area?

If I don't know exactly what I need, exact cross referenced numbers/descriptions/vehicle names and equivalents, they just look at me with a blank stare, shaking their head side to side (kinda like RoverX's sheep). That's why most of my parts are rebuilt...

When it comes to parts, I wish I had a simple computer problem. But then, who told me to live in Bolivia, right?

most parts i ask for when i go to places like that are "dealership only" parts they tell me..like pcv's and other things...

but the alternator was only 150 from autozone w/ lifetime warrenty...Walnut Creek Land Rover wanted $700 for it...

First of all the computer on the counter is ALWAYS CRAP!!!!

It's the computer BEHIND the counter that you need to get to know.

I always go to the usual places for oil etc. but when I need something tht isn't a generic part I go somewhere that has a little white truck with the napa or carquest logo on the door out front. You see that when a parts store wants to supply parts to all the local repair shps in the area, dealers included, they call a place that has a guy behind the counter that works there for more than the employee discount on neon tubes for the running board of his civic.

Repair shops need the right part right now. Not some idiot telling them " What's Lucas" or "Land Rover, that's a toyota right?"

I have found that the Carquest shop in Chatsworth CA has just about as many parts as British pacific and usually for less money.

One other important thing to look for is the counter guy needs grease under his nails.

I sold my Disco and bought a Saturn Relay (yeah I know) and on the eight day of ownership I clipped a column in my garage and bent the rear axle. If I had done it in my disco I'd have knocked my building down.
