Default ATF flush - not for everybody?

Thoughts from a four year study on my beloved '97 SE7

60K when purchased (probably had the original oil & filter)bastids

125K now -

over the years:

sea-foamed several times
ATF flush several times

I installed new timing chain, front crank seal, scraped 3/8" sludge out of pan
(thought they only held 3Qts for years)LOL

reamed out oil pickup

tons of incidental maint.

ALWAYS HAD LIFTER NOISE - especially on start-up

The other day I put a $3 can of CD-2 oil detergent in (drove around as recommended)

the last four starts including (2) sitting overnight have had no lifter noise.
(something tells me I shouldn't be talking about this)

luck all,greg

You should have never have put seafoam or ATF fluid in the crankcase....

Yes, I know seafoam says you can put it in the crankcase but you really shouldn't. I would only put seafoam in the gas tank. ATF puts some serious wear on the engine.

Actually, I wasn't condemning the practice, (which is common), more that it should be a last resort.

My concern was more with forums encouraging those who are mechanically challenged to do it as a first line remedy.

I'm just surprised that this CD-2 oil detergent quieted my lifters so quickly when other methods seemed to have no effect.

It gave me second thoughts about tearing down my motor.

luck,greg

I'll say it again, NO ONE should EVER put ATF in the crankcase.
