Not being an experienced Land Rover owner I need to know if this is normal. When coasting at 35-40 mph the transmission can't decide what gear it wants. I am assuming 2nd and 3rd gear. It just goes back and forth between gears until I press on the gas or it drops down to under 35 and it will go to 2nd. Just did a fluid and filter change, it also did it before.
Any ideas on what a solution might be? Greg 1997 disco 150,000 mi |

This might be what your talking about.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engine Speed Fluctuation at Moderate Speed Closed Throttle AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE: DISCOVERY (LJ) 1997 MY Advanced EVAPS Equipped VIN: up to VA727076 Automatic up to VA726789 Manual up to VA558898 Manual and Automatic SITUATION: IDLE FLUCTUATES DURING MODERATE SPEED CLOSED THROTTLE OPERATION There have been reports of engine flare or surge when the vehicle is decelerating. The engine speed may fluctuate between 1200 and 1600 rpm (up to 400 rpm total fluctuation) when the throttle is closed and the vehicle speed is between 35 and 50 mph (56-80 kph.). This may occur in GEMS equipped, Advanced EVAPS vehicles in the above VIN ranges. RESOLUTION: REPLACE PROM Upon customer complaint only, install a new PROM set which has been developed to eliminate the problem. Replace the PROM set using established Operation Pride procedures. (TIB 19/08/96/US) PARTS INFORMATION: PRM9640 PROM (Automatic) PRM9641 PROM (Manual) LRNASTATK Anti-Static Mat REPAIR PROCEDURE: REPLACE PROM NOTE: Make sure to complete the DPR and FAX to LRNA. Use procedures outlined in earlier phases of Operation Pride to replace PROM set. (TIB 19/08/96/US) Following installation of the PROM set, start and warm up the vehicle from full cold to hot at idle, in Drive with the Park Brake applied. This will adapt the engine management IACV system and minimize any noticeable changes to the customer upon return of the vehicle. __________________ Michael Polensek For Pres 2008!!!!

Greg, you may also be looking at a shift cable adjustment. Unlike D2's D1's shift based on throttle pressure that is transfered to the tranny by an adjustable cable, yours might be out of adjustment.

I am leaning toward the shift cable. Because it does it between 3rd and 4th tooand at very exact speeds. Should I take it to a transmission shop to get them to make the adjustment?
It could also be what Badger1 suggests and it is just showing up in the tranny. The rpm's do jump when it is acting up. Was this a recall or just a service bulletin? How do you diagnose? It quits with just slight pressure on the gas pedal. Thanks for the help! |

If you are even slightly handly with 2 9/16---15mm wrenches you can do it.

Well, I spoke too soon.
Still having the shifting issue. It is better when the engine is warming up, but at normal temps it starts back up with the crazy shifting. If the adjustment of about 1mm is correct could it be something else like the cable binding up? The throttle cable was doing that and causing a high idle, could that be a possibility? Should I spray some Seafoam(Deep Creep) into the Throttle pressure cable to give it some lube. I have read posts that this shifting is not good for the transmission and should be fixed or you will kill the transmission. Greg |

I took it to a local transmission shop today to see if they could get the cable right. They took a look at it, saw that it was snapping back as it should. They drove it and said it was probably the torque converter going into "permature lockup". They said there was no way of knowing until they pulled the transmission to test/inspect.
Should this throw a code? Also, the diagnostic plug is hanging out from the bottom of the dash. Should that be plugged into something or is it o.k. to leave it. Please help before my wallet gets raped. Greg |

The tranny on a D1 is mechanical, not electronically control so there are no codes.
The OBD2 plug should be secured up in it's spot but effect anything if not other then being in the way. Mike |

Big $$$'s.
Before you try and throw parts and labor at it how about a good tranny additive like Lucas to see if it will free up the shifting and locking process, $10 can't hurt in the whole sceme of things. Mike |
