Default Backfire, and loss of power

I have a 99D1 4.0 that I replaced the fuel pump in. The rover only has 92 k on it. At idle it runs great, no pecking, knocking or ect. How ever when I drive it begins to backfire in the intake plenum at around 30-35 mph. I am at a loss please help..

The only things that will cause a backfire are the ignition timing being way off or a sticky intake valve.
What has the maintenance been like on this truck?

Are you 100% sure its backfiring and not misfiring?

If it sat with gas in it for a year it could just be stale gas.

sorry its been a few days. (work the rover seems to run fine till it comes up to temp, then there is a slight pecking sound, then it progresses into a full miss and knock. I am now suspecting a crank sensor is at fault as the problems seem to only do this at at normal operating temp. once the rover has had a chance to cool down the problems go away and the cycle repeats itself.
