also im going to need a new air filter soon. would anyone recommend using an uprated filter with this engine even though its totally standard? thanks. jim. |

If your diesel is smoking under accell, You need a Air filter NOW.
Diesel comsumes MUCH more air then a gasoline engine. Buy a air filter that is up to the task.

Your Tdi will black smoke when you dump the throttle a little anyway as the engine dumps a load more fuel in to the cylinders. As for filters, if you feel like upgrading then K&N (cloth) and ITG (Foam) both do them for a 300TDI disco. I have had both in my 200TDI, there is NO difference between them performance wise, but the ITG is a damned sight easier to clean and re-treat. Also cheaper IIRC. Out of interest are we talking HUGE black cloud or just noticable? Other things to consider are; Dirty Intercooler, they do need cleaning out every now and again. Timing belt out, when was the timing belt last changed?

the smoke is noticeable, but ive seen much worse. ive only recently got the vehicle but i know it hasnt really been looked after by the guy ive bought it off (it was damn cheap though). the intercooler was replaced 18 months ago, the airfilter is filthy, the cam belt was replaced as soon as i picked the car up but it was 2 teeth out before replacement. i cant find a diesel specialist on the island (i live in lanzarote) to check the pump out.
which air filter is the easiest to clean? |
