Buying a discovery

Hi I'm new to this forum and currently looking for a disco; however, I'm a newbie to land rovers and do not exactly know the differences between the disco i and disco ii. Can somebody help point that out?

Also, what are the common issues/problems with the disco?( i know about the leaky roofs but that's about it... =( )

Welcome to the group.
For starters, there are very few roof leaks, and if they leak it is because people don't keep an eye on the Alpine window seals that are getting baked every day by the sun, yes they can fail and or be fixed pretty easily.
As for the differences between D1's and D2's, there really is alot in my option. The biggest difference between them is that when the D2 came out in 99, it was now all Bosch , no Lucas, and that is a hugh difference. The D2 is longer with more room has ETC and Hill Descent, many up graded features from radios through the suspension. They are quieter, smoother on the road and off then D1's and equal to the Di off the road.
Don't get me wrong, the D1 is a great truck no matter how much their owners grumble, I just feel the D2's have more to offer.
By the way, I own a 99 D2.

Yes, as Andre-Georg says, there is one significant mechanical difference, which depending on the year of DII, you may have, could possibly add, or may have no hope of getting. Of course, maybe the CDL isn't what A-G was referring to...

I have a 99 DI and an 04 DII. As you'll probably see here and on other popular Landy websites, each vehicle's history of mechanical shortcomings will be influenced by how well it was maintained by previous owners (if any). That said, I have ~109k miles and my only major problems have been leaky head gaskets and a leaking steering box, both of which seem to be common. I had the gaskets replaced about a month ago, and a couple of weeks ago the steering box was replaced after an oil cooler line rubbed a hole in one of the steel lines external to the steering box.

Anyway, I love my D1 and the relative simplicity of working on it. Granted I haven't suffered many Lucas gremlins yet. Mike is dead-on when he says that the DII is more comfortable on road. I wouldn't know off-road because my wife isn't too keen on getting 'her' Disco off the beaten track. It's hard enough for me to take it into loose terrain occasionally to exercise the diff lock. Someday she will tire of it and then I'll get to break it in properly...

I digress. I recently drove an LR3 off-road and now I'm hooked on HDC! The larger cargo area in the DII is nice, too. Bottomline, there are pluses and minuses to both, so a lot comes down to personal preference and budget.

I currently own two DIIs, one is a 2001 model and the other is a 2004.

I decided to sell my wife's Freelander last December while she was on holiday. We had been planing this and she was keen on a new Freelander (we never had any of the problems that other people seem to have)

Cut a long a long story short, a brand new Disco II here in Dubai is cheaper than the top of the range Freelander, plus we have 3 year service and warranty (100K Km)

Damn good motor and great off road

The difference beteween a DI and DII is about 23000

There are that many change that they called in a new series. They may look similar, but thats about all.

The other similar feature is the leaks. everthing leaks. Don't park it on a nice driveway, because you are bound to leave your mark
