Default Check engine light is on but Disco runs fines

Today the check engine light came on but the truck runs fine. There is no overheating and no engine oil is leaking and I checked the oil level it was still at full. I did put gas in it today and didn't click 3 times but I pulled over and clicked it 3 times. The light is still on. Could bad sensors or something else that needs investigating.

Post You threw a code......

Something happened that the ECU did not like, or you had something going wrong but now it was bad enough to throw a code.

Two ways to solve it:

Go to a PepBoys and they read the code for free. Write down the code and look it up on the interest. P1123 for example. See what it means. Ask here if you dont know. We here to help.

Second, a nice piece of equipment for 1996-on Discos is a OBD2 codereader. Look around and buy one for the next time. They go from $40 and up. I own a Atron CP9145 and it is very helpful. My is a little more expensive but it has a 3 line display that tells you a brief note what the code means.

http://www.ultrarg.com.mx/Scanners/cp9145.gif

You can also buy the OBD2 software for laptop and palmtop use.

Finally, there is the CarChip and that will also clear the code when the laptop is in the car. You want the expensive EX one but it is cheaper on eBay.

As long as the Check Engine light is on, you are in open loop mode. You are running in a limp mode. You will not have a good performance out of the engine. Your gas milage will also suffer and you will notice a smell of sulfer coming out of the exhaust. That is the unburnt gas going into your cats and beginning the contamination of the cats. Please don't let go for too long. Cats are expensive.

Was I enough help?

One way or the other, you need to have someone read the codes and find out what is wrong.

If it were the gas cap tha set the code, tightening it after the fact, will not turn off the light, you will need to clear it as you do all other codes.

Dude...if you can get out here tonight or Thursday night, I'll read the codes and reset the light for you. Or you can do it sometime next week. I am gone to Pismo this weekend. You can have the codes read at most Autoparts stores but usually their readers will not reset the light. Some do, most don't.

Autozone will reset the CEL, but you need proof that work has been done on the car to fix the problem that was setting off the light in the first place. But they will at least read the codes for free.
