Default *Check Engine* warning?

I hope someone can help me here....

I have a Discovery N Reg 2.5 TDI automatic...

Whilst driving the 'Check Engine' Warning light appears and the car looses all power however i can still hear the engine running.

According to my local garage...the engine and gearbox are fine but the problem remains a mystery...

This problem reoccurs more often when i am driving between 20-30mph, or if im accelerating for the first time.....

Has this happened to anyone else??

I know nothing about Tdi's but did they check the throttle? When you mean you lose all power do you mean when you press the accelerator nothing happens? Just sounds like your throttle is having problems because you said your engine remains on and idleing.

It won't be the throttle I wouldn't have thought, diesels don't have a throttle body or TB blade. The throttle linkage is massive and very robust and mounted onto the Bosch injector pump.

Gonna guess you are in the UK as it's N reg?

Also diesel auto's are pretty rare. And I'm also going to guess you have one of the very few ECU controlled 300tdi's.

Most ECU (electronic control unit) setups will have a "limp" mode where it detects something wrong and reduces engine power and rpms to prevent damage, often this is triggered by a faulty sensor as opposed to something wrong.

Of course it may not be this, do you have any more info? Like what happens to the rpms when this happens? Could it be the gearbox slipping? How long does it take to recover? What happens when it does recover?

Other things to check:

fuel - if there's a faulty injector it would reduce flow. Or if the injector pump is faulty (very rare and not likely).

air - I had this probelm on a Peugeot. There was a small split in the fuel line and under load it was allowing air to be sucked in, this effectively stalled the engine as it kept running out of fuel

Who have you had look at your Discovery and what part of the coutry are you in? I might be able to recommend some one to help you out.

Hi there

Many thanks for your advice and you guessed right i'm from the UK.

I also think it could be the gearbox slipping too however my local garage seem very relunctant to do anything about it...

It only happens for a few seconds, and the RPMs drops. Once its over it changes gear and runs back to normal...

I've taken in it to our local LV garage in Luton in the past but due to a number of bad experiences I dont really want to go there again...So I would be grateful if you could recommend someone/garage.

Once again thanks for your advice!!! The mystery will be solved.......eventually!

Yeah the Land Rover Dealer in Luton sucks BIG time I really wouldn't go there if at all possible, plus they'll just rip you off as well.

Sadly diagnosing a fault can be a pain and costly.

It might be worth a phone call or visit here:http://www.woodside-landrovers.co.uk/

It's a private run Land Rover Specialist. The own Mark Smith used to be the Service manage at Dunham & Haynes in Luton (the Land Rover dealership before they where bought out by the current owner).

He is very helpful and very knowledgeable.

Woodside Garage (Maulden) Ltd, Clophill Road, Maulden, Bedfordshire, MK45 2AE
Tel: 01525 862727 Mobile: 07876 440707

He is based only just down the A6 about 15mins from Luton, if you know the area you just need to head up the A6 from Luton towards Bedford, at the Clophill round-about (there's a Beefeater there - The Flying Horse I think) turn left towards Ampthill. About a 100 yards down turn right. Follow the road round a tight left hand bend about 50 yards ahead, just as you come out of the bend there is a dirt track/yard entrance on your right. Woodside gagrage should have a sign there. Just follow the track down to the bottom and he should be on your left the last unit in the yard.
