Default Cleaning the Engine Bay

The 96 Disco I bought was not cared for/loved. The engine bay is a mess. I know there are leaks because not only is the engine dirty so is the suspension/axel. Everything is so dirty you can not tell where the leaks are coming from. I want to clean the bay/engine/suspension. Can I get some thoughts and recommendations (Procedures and products) from some one who has already fought this battle.

This is a careful job. Mask all electrical connections and try to avoid hitting anything electrical. Most engine cleaners work with a little forceful spray, just be careful of the electrics. Let it dry before trying to start.

dont spray without the engine running or else your dead.

this applies to brand new vehicles as well.

had a cleaner put a hose to a brand new one for no reason except a little dust and the damn thing wouldnt start no matter what we did.

left it overnight and it started up as if nothing happend.

So no, clean it while running and leave it running for a while to dry everything out and then start doing the work.
