Default cleaning out intercooler

I have a 300tdi Discovery and i want to wash out the intercooler. What is the best thing to use?

I have heard Land Rover do a intercooler wash/cleaner but its expensive, is that right?

Cheers for any advise

I dunno too much about the Tdi motors, but from what I heard from a friend who is getting his associates degree for Diesel Technician, he says to clean the intercooler, by using something that will evaporate quickly, like throttle body cleaner, but from what I see on domestic diesel motors, they say not to use that type of cleaner. What he refers to, is bigger diesels, like Volvo, Cummins, CAT, etc..

If you wanted to keep things from getting dirty and a mess of things, I would take it to the dealer to have it cleaned out.

manni
go to www.discoveryownersclub.com and see the post's there
basically you need to remove the intercooler, fill with parafine and leave to soak as long as possible, flush out with plenty of water and make sure you dry it, dont leave any traces of parafine in the intercooler !! and refit to vehicle

Not sure what gain you'll get from cleaning it. The only thing in there is likely to be oil residue, which means some form of vapour decreaser would be required. But apart from knowing it's cleaner I doubt you'll see any difference otherwise.

Larger aftermarket intercoolers are the way to go. Places like Allisport offer kits for about £400 inc fitting. They will also adjust the injector pump and fuel it up for more power.

A cheaper option is to just get a 2nd intercooler from a breakers (older 3.0 Supra Turbo??) or buy a generic one from somewhere like Demon Tweeks and plumb it in yourself.

Or there's always Ebay.

cheers everyone for the replies.

The reason i was going to clean the intercooler was because it stated it on the Land Rover service ticksheet at i think 48,000 or 72,000 miles(can not remember which). As Land Rover put it on the sheet i thought there must be a reason.
