Hello all, I have a 98 Disco 1
I am having this code come up (1316) along with battery dying and the tac dancing. I have tested the bat and the alt, both tested good, however this beast still runs bad. I mean sometimes it will be fine then other times it will just bog down under a load. I just had the camshaft replaced due to a misfire in the number one cylinder, which was caused by a bad cam lobe.I have replaced the plug wires and spark plugs. From what I have read it appears that I may have an alt going bad. Does the alt just stop working or can it go bad over time? What other areas can I troubleshoot to find the problem. If anyone can advise me I would really appreciate it. I have dumped more money into this thing than I ever wanted. thank you, Eric Last edited by golfinat420 : 03-02-2007 at 01:41 PM. |

Good lord help me...... One day later I checked the codes again and now have P1187 , fuel air metering.
P0300, multiple cylinder misfire. P0307, cylender 7 misfire. P1316, ignition system, or misfire. Could bad O2 sensors cause this kind of behavior? |

It seems very unlikely that O2 sensors are causing this code mayhem.
1 Is your battery giving lotsa voltage? Over 13 volts? If the voltage drops below a threshold - somewhere less than 12 volts, there can be all kinds of strange symptoms (poor idling, loss of power) due to an upset ECU. 2 Are you positive your alternator is OK? 3 Pull off the spart plug leads and check for corrosion in each - clean out carefully. Check that all engine compartment connectors are clean and properly plugged in. When you had your camshaft replaced, the "techy" will have disturbed the wiring. If you've been driving in the wet over this winter, many electrical connections could be saturated. If you've parked the vehicle for most of the winter, then condensation will be a potential problem. 4 When did you last replace your fuel filter (check fuel pressure at the valve on the fuel rail). What about your in-tank fuel pump? Let me warn you that this is the type of problem that the dealer will fleece you over - if you let him. You need more free opinions. |

Are you still running factory plug wires? With that many misfire codes, it could still be the charging system running the ecu with too little voltage.
It won't be the fuel filter although if you haven't changed it in awhile it would be a good idea. Mike |

I REALLY appriciate you guys help,
As for the batt/alt the batt test fine I think, it reads right at 13 and the alt accually read 16 or so. However the batt only has 450 crank volts. Dont know if that will cause a prob!!!!! I checked the fuel pressure it read, right at 30 and even went up a little when I shut her down. The fuel pump in the tank seems to be working, at least it sounds like it.The fuel filter I will have to look at a little closer. I did just replace the plug wires and cleaned the spark plugs that looked fine. Now, while looking for bad connections I did find a sensor (I THINK) attached right to the lower left side of the block. It was completly broke and I am not sure yet what it is or how it may affect the performance. WHAT IS THIS SENSOR????? Thank you all for your imput, I will certainly explore all of your ideas and thoughts. Yall have given me new life in this headach!!! Eric |

16 volts is an excessive over charge from your alternator, max. should be no more then 14.6 volts, may want to look closer at that.
The fuel filter won't cause what your misfires, I only suggested changing it cause most people do let them go to long. Mike |
