The other day in traffic, I noticed the coolant temperature go up higher than I had seen it; not in the red, but still it concerned me. The condenser fans are not working and in Texas, we were already pushing 90 on Saturday. I've read through the schematics, checked the 30 amp fuse, replaced the relay because I was betting that was the problem. Still no fans. I haven't tested them yet, but wonder if I can just run 12V from the battery to do so. I find it hard to believe both of them would go out at the same time. Maybe one had been out and I hadn't noticed it. Once in a while the A/C fan just shuts off, but if the switch is moved, it comes right back on. Could it be related? Maybe a A/C fan relay or just the switch itself. Thanks for any help.

Wade, I think there is a high pressure switch that turns on the fans when the A/C is engaged, so my thought would be to jump the fans with a hot wire to verify they are OK and then look into a bad switch.

I took a couple of electrical wires, tied one to each terminal of the battery, and scraped the rubber off of the leads to one of the fans. I got power to it and nothing happened. There is a great import wrecking yard in Austin and I think I'll get two and replace them. If it turns out that I didn't jump it correctly and the fans are good, then I'll sell them on ebay and go on to the switch. Thanks.

I've had a problem with my condenser fans[on my 97 Disco] not working for a while but I put it on the back burner. Now that it's starting to get warm again, I thought I would see if I can sort it out... which is why I revived this old thread.
I have replaced the fan temp switch and the relay and nothing. Any other ideas? Disco Mike- if the fans don't go on when the A/C is on OR when the engine gets hot then can I assume it's not this "high pressure switch" that you referred to earlier in this thread? Do you know where this switch is located? |

Yes the a/c high pressure switch is a factor, bottom line if the ECU doesn't get a signal from one or the other then the fan won't come on. Mike |

On Discovery Series one, if you turn on the AC, and turn on the cockpit fan....The condensor fans come on. Even if the engine isn't running but the key is in Position II. This is regardless if you have a fully charged/Functioning AC or not. The Snoflake/Cockpit fan switch send a command to the Engine ECU to turn on the Ac AND the fans.
The High pressure switch has nothing to do with the transaction. If the fans arent working, Turn the key to II, turn on the Snoflake button and turn on the cockpit fan to whatever speed. Access the 2 tire plug that connects to the fan and check for Battery voltage. If you HAVE battery voltage, the fans are junk. This proceedure is outlined in the service manual, which surely you have because it is the best TOOL for repairing a car. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/083...Fencoding=UTF8 If you discover the fans are junk, Autozone has some generic electric fans that work GREAT, and cheap. |
