Default conventional or synthetic oil?

Hi,

I have a 97 Disco I (79,000 miles) and I just changed my oil. While I was changing it, I thought about switching to Mobile 1 or a synthetic blend of real oil and synthetic. My question is, on my next oil change, would it damage my engine if I put Mobile 1 or a synthetic blend in the engine?
What are the pros and cons?

No it wouldn't damage it. Cons are price, and if you have leaks, you will leak faster. Pros are better winter operation, more stable under high heat and a higher shear strength. Possibly better mileage, but no promises.

My 97 has 74k on it now, i use Royal Purple 10w 40. No problems, no new leaks.

It is a bit more expensive, and hopefully i get what i pay for. supposedly you dont have to change it as often as dino oil either but i still do the 3k change.

Default conventional or synthetic oil?

I read that its a good idea to flush the engine with 6 quarts of ATF, for 20 minutes, prior to switching to a synthetic oil. Is this a good idea?

Thanks.

It is not a good idea to be putting through ATF. People suggest this to desludge a motor. What they don't take into account is how the sludge gets out of the oil galleries. It gets out past bearings, lifters, cams, etc. I can destroy these components and significantly reduce engine life.

OiL

Enjoy.

Sludge! If you ahve to clean out sludge from your engine, your engine wasnt maintained.

Who told you to run 6 Quarts of ATF in your engine as a prep for Syn oil? Whatever that person tells you in future....Ignore it.

Switching from Dead dino to syn on a healthy engine will do nothing bad. If something fails(Gaskets..Clogged oil port, etc) it wasn't the oil that caused it, it was the oil that brought the marginal part to light.

Default conventional or synthetic oil?

I just thought about oil filters. When switching to Mobil 1, does the type of oil filter have to change also?

No. But that depends on whether you are using a decent oil filter now. Would be a bit pointless to spend a large amount on good oil and then use a cheap filter. But then again you should not use a cheap filter with cheap oil either.

ou may find this a interesting read

But you have been proved to make statements about things you know very little about. Oil is one of those areas.

You have proven this time and time again. You just read something on the internet by another expert and take it as gospel.

These articles might indicate that black is bad. That is, your own references state that there is only so much soot and other nasty things that the oil can hold. Once it reaches its limit, it will cause sludge. These articles also highlight that there are many other factors causing the oil to change colour. Again you just want to home in on one small point and then decide that the whole world revolves around it. Start seeing the forest rather than just the trees.
