Default CV joint woes...replacement and other things!

Hi All,

You can't have missed my threads regarding CV joints and steering boxes...

..yesterday I went to my parts supplier and bought the whole kit! Axle stands, Hub spanner, little gaskets, lock washers, one shot grease and of course a CV joint!

BTW my truck was one of the first off the line - If you've looked through your Haines manual you'll have found it refers to "Older models" and "Later models" - mine is actually older than the "older model"! So haines was practicaly useless...

..to cut a long story short when I eventually got the stub axle off the Swivel housing I found the swivel housing pivot bearings totally shot too! So if you're going in there may I suggest you take some with you!

It took about 5 hrs to get the thing apart (it hadn't been opend up for 16 years!) and about 40 minutes to put back together! I recon now that everything is free'd up - I could do the whole job in under an hour now.

Guess what? I still get a dull thunk when I take off and turn at the same time! Is this simply the new tyres biting the tarmac?

So WTF is going on? It's not a similar noise (suspect broken new CV joint) It is EXACTLY the SAME noise.

Looking at it philosophically I did change some potentially life threatening bearings - so I am a happy bunny - but I've run out of ideas now...

Cheers, Mark HH

Only when turning? Is the noise in sink with the revolutions of the wheel?

I would also look at the driveshaft, motor/tranny mounts, shock towers, shock studs. Another consideration is the tie rod ends and the bracket where the track bar attaches to the frame.
