Default damn check engine light

so my check engine light came on...again..for like the 100th time...but this time it isn't going away like it normally does...is there a way to see what its on for without one of those computer things....like on my buddy's chevy theres somehwere you can push a paper clip in and the check engine light will flash a certain amount of times depending on whats wrong with it.

anything like htat?

Huh, no.

You need a OBD2 codereader and pulling the power wont erase the codes.

I think it will stay on when you are due for a service. Check your milage and see if there is a service for that milage. I think it's the "check engine" that is ok.. & it's the "service engine" that is potentially scarey.. might want to double check your manual.. as I am not too sure.

Light will come on in YELLOW that is the CEL (Check Engine Light), simply go to AutoZone and have them pull your codes for FREE (as long as it is OBD2). Now if your truck is a 1994 or 1995 than it is OBD1 and the codes can be read under the passenger side seat...You will find a box with numbers lit up.

Once pulled, go here to see what is going on with your truck: http://www.iequus.com/obd_def.asp

If the light is RED and says Service Engine SOON (SES Light) then that is a service reminder. Time to do things like change your 02 Sensors ect. That light only comes on at about 52K and about 105k respectively. GOOD LUCK!

"Now if your truck is a 1994 or 1995 than it is OBD1 and the codes can be read under the passenger side seat...You will find a box with numbers lit up."

Now that's the umpteenth time I've heard that. I had to have my CEL cleared to pass emissions however, I never saw a box with any kind of window that flashed numbers. The only thing I saw was the small box that flashed a light. Ex. 1 flash = the #1; 2 flashes = the #2 etc. I didn't necessarily need codes, I already knew this info. Is mine different or what?

Check Engine and Service Engine are two different lights.

The display is under the front passenger seat, it looks like this:

They used the same display as the Rangies (that's why it says RR on it). I remove all electronics from under the seats and that's why it's hanging off my CB speaker.
