Diff Lock and low ratio

Hi, I have a 96, auto discovery, which I took for bit of a play along a gravel and sand coast today.

Even got stuck in low ratio with the Diff lock engaged. TO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!


Anyway the question is, is there a maximum speed or engine RPM that you should stay under in low ratio, or with the diff lock engaged

There's no 'limit' to Low Range, as such, just the maximum speed that the gears will let you go within your engine's limits, which is probably about 35 mph. However, in an off-road, low speed situation it's best to stick to your engine's torque peak, which is 1800-2000 rpm. which gives maximum pulling power.

Diff Lock can be engaged at any speed (as long as the wheels aren't slipping), but you shouldn't go faster than 30 mph with the differential locked, or the tension caused by wind-up gets a bit too much, plus it will be very uncomfortable to drive!

Don't know what you have for tires, but airing them down to 16 to 18#'s will also help.
