Diff Lock Problems - Land Rovers Only

In November I went to Death Valley and ran 1100 miles of trail over the span of six days. My rover performed awesomely. Through tiny canyons, gravely washes, sandy hills, washboard, extremely extrusive igneous outcroppings, and much more my little disco triumphed over all!!!

...........But..........

Fifty miles from home the rover was experiencing a little overheating problem. Once I got home the truck sat on its parking pad for two days. On the third I needed to go fill up with gas. It started fine, but once I started moving....."BLUURP!!" "CRACK!!" "COUGH!!" "SPIT!!" "GRIND!!" "GERGLE!!" "FART!!" "BWLARRGG!!" and an assortment of many other frightening noises coming from the T-Case area sounded (all motion has stopped by now). I jumped out and looked under the truck just in time to see a glob of fluid slurp out of a newly formed crack in the T-Case...

I ordered a used, not rebuilt, T-case. It took me awhile to find a mech who was willing to work on my rover. After two weeks in the shop I went to pick up my once triumphant disco.

"Every thing is installed," said the grungy mech. "but we could figure out how to get that little shifter thingy to work."

I figured they just didn't know how to work it. So I took the car home.

Except for a minor leaking problem the case works fine. December and January goes by.

On comes February, oddly there is no snow at my place. As result from a warm and wet winter (so far). thislast sat I decided to go wheeling.

Coming across a large mud hole I thought to my self "Hmmm, being not experienced in the ways of mud wallowing, I shall stick it diff high".
So I tried, all I got was a loud continuous beep. The same thing with low.

What is my Problem? Is a cable not hooked up?

I know I didn’t have to write all that. But I am trying to waste my last break.

What happened to the original Xcase?! Why did it overheat, didn't it have any fluid or something? Just curious.

Have you crawled under the truck to see if the linkage was connected? What did the mechanic mean by, we couldn't figure out how to get the shifter thingy to work?

The original T-case explodierte. The fluid levels were fine before I left. but when it blew it lost all of its fluid. So I don't know.

What I thought the mech ment was he couldn't figure out how to get it in lock. I had trouble getting it right when bought the rover, the directional sticker is gone.

Linkage? Is it something noticable? This is not my area.

Badger,
When you mention the beeping sound, I think of my Disco II when I shift from high to kow range. If I do not get the t/case engaged completily I get a warning beeping sound. Sounds like wha you are hearing, maybe. For my D II it is normal, did you not have this before?

No, I have never had that before. The shifter knob just stiffly moves around and wont lock into any position except back normal.

Sounds like either the linkage is bent or not adjusted properly.

Could I do fix that with out taking it to a shop?

sounds like you could do it by taking out the center console, which is a 2 hour job initself.

pick up the pace Homy 15 min for me,

i would get the center console out and have a drill with a right angle head or some kind of grinder for the (cold chisel last option)rivets that hold in the top plate and get some sheet metal screws to put it back.... never though rivets were a good idea when it willl have to come back up eventually.

You get the center console up and out of the way. your left with 2 pieces of metal that are riveted down. you drill out or grind off these rivets, lift the metal pieces and you have complete access to the top of the tranny and transfer case. its a lot simpler than it sounds.
