Hello all:
This post may belong in a different section of the forum but since it is Disco I related only, I'd figured you guys could help best! 99 Disco I w/ 100K miles...owned 7 months now & now I have time for some fun w/ it. I even bought the Rave CD & printed it out into 2 3" binders (very cool). The only area I'm a little "green" on is the stereo. Has factory tape deck which has crappy reception (bad FM booster I'm told) & whines/hisses at will w/ not much power (bad amp I'm told). Questions: Where is factory amp located? How do you bypass factory amp so you can run connections from aftermarked CD deck speaker wires to speaker locations (or better yet, aftermarket amp & box!)? Are the tweeters on the windshield posts run off same speaker wires as front door speakers? All the Disco forum sites seem to have very little on this factory stereo & I'm confused. Thanks all! JKK |

im wondering the same thing...im getting ready to get a CD player for my 97, and im guessing that an aftermarket player will put out more power than stock...might not even have to bypass the factory amp unless you are looking for much louder sound from your door speakers

You literally create a "Frankenstein" sound system by adapting "this" to "that". Save your self a lot of headaches and simply change out the whole thing. The factory amp is located in the rear door and is incorporated in the speaker assambly. You will find that you cannot simply replace it with another, certainly not in the same location. Just disconnect it and leave it, or as I did with mine is strip it out and use the cavity (covered with the original speaker mesh) as an extra tool carrying compartment.
You can replace the tweeters in the A pillar, most aftermarket ones will fit, and if memory serves me correct, the wiring is the same as the front speakers. Trying to hook everything up to operated off the buttons on your dash is another matter. Some members on this forum might have some other ideas, but I just use the remote that comes with any new head unit, and have allocated the 'empty buttons' other uses, such as switching my Lockers on and off. Hope this helps.
