Help! When i select reverse on my v8 Auto 1998 Discovery it bangs/slaps into reverse. The degree to which this happens varies from wonderfully smooth to quite a disconcerting bang. This does not happen in forward gears.
The car has a full service history and has only done a genuine 56,000miles. I have had an expert check everything and re-lube using correct oils etc and he was impressed at how well maintained the car is and found no faults after meticulous investigation. He only replaced a couple of minor parts, just in case and to be sure. Has anyone experienced this? Some say it may even be a characteristic of the model where some are worse than others. I am grateful for anyones help or similar experiences, Thanks! |

Same thing on my D1. I put it in neutral for a couple of seconds before shifting from Drive to reverse. That tends to alleviate the "hard" shift and banging noise. I don't know if it makes a difference, but it keeps the anxiety in check.

Mine's done it as long as I can remember, but I read on here that it's nothing to worry about, and it's never been a problem, so I'm not concerned. Gives the truck character

My 98 has been doing this since day one. Seems to be a characteristic of the selector/box and quite normal. I also found a second in neutral prior to going into reverse will alleviate the worst of it.

I dont recall a time my Disco has ever not "clunked" into reverse. I have close to 160,000 miles.
