I was doing a little reading on www.LandroversNews.com and found this article on http://www.landroverparts.us/landrovernews.html the first one i read was how New York is planin on bannin Brush bars/Bull bars and any aftermarket bumper - right underneith is an article that i think everyone should read - its about The Rotor how one is the original and the other is a peice of crap- bbut anyways the point is it sounded a lot like what was going on with my truck so i faxed him a copy of the article along with the picture and he said the original rotor was in there.... so i was left at that

I see a lot of caps that go bad- the centre post spring fails or the rotors go bad. Cheap to replace... HOWEVER... If the guy doesn't know Rovers well, he might have pulled up on the rotor and broken the retainer that holds the two parts of the shaft together. It is REALLY common and cannot be fixed if that happens. If it can't maintain a timing setting, that's often why.

The reason it is A: sending out "wierd signals" and B: making it backfire (not running rich) is that he probably messed with the pickup unit, and may not have set the airgap between it and the reluctor properly. It MUST be done with a nylon, or brass feeler guage, and the gap must be within the tolerance, or the pickup will start 'sencing way to much, giving firing info to the amp, and on to the coil. Jeesh. Is the guy a Land Rover Mechanic? Backfiring from a bad cap is because it has carbon tracking on the inside, caused by humidity. This, However isn't your problem, nor is it the rotor. Bad (read:cheap) rotors short out down thru the center to the shaft. That's why people pull the coil wire to check for spark, and it's there, but none to the plugs.

You don't need a new distributor, you need a new mechanic. However, if you want to buy one anyway, either Paul Grant or I would be happy to oblige you.

The dizzy is either good or not good. If he doesn't know, then he's not too swift on the Rover thing. We've seen them improperly assembled, broken retainers (from rambo-yanking off the rotors), and sometimes just plain worn out and lots of play. The vac advance can go bad, as can the coil. It's not rocket science, the distributor isn't any different than any other one that was made for decades.

Rover coils are internally ballasted- common mistake.
