The main reason is because if you have a factory radio and don't have the radio code, you won't be able to use you radio.
Unhooking the battery for too long can errase alot of info from your ECU and then it has to go thru a long relearning curve over the next couple tanks of gas. Mike |

Rebelman -I have disonnected the battery many times without any trouble other than having to punch in the radio code. If you have two 4 foot wires (black and red is nice) with small alligator clips on each end, you should be able to hook up a new battery while maintaining current flow to the vehicle from the old battery.
