Exclamation Drivetrain

Hey guys,

My 96 D1 has an old RotoFlex on it from a while back. Before, I would get vibes at like 50-65 mph. After I got the slightly larger MTs, the vibes kick in at around 70-75mph and go away right around 80 where the truck then becomes a cloud.

As of yesterday, I've been having low speed vibrations and squeeks. The squeeks are vehicle speed dependant, being a higher frequency of squeeks the faster I go until about 40 mph where the sound of the road is just too much to hear them and at 50mph the vibes go away. Then the vibration becomes a pulsating effect from 10-0mph, having the frequency of squeeks decrease right along with it.

Could this be something like the front U-joints needing grease or a definate sign of my rotoflex about to give for good!?!?!

So, have you checked the u-joints, how often do you lube them, have you inspected the rotoflex and or changed it out. Think about dropping one drive shaft, lock your cdl and drive on one shaft, see if you still have the problem. I would suggest ther rear one first if your rotoflex is shot.

May be a silly question- but does it change if you hit the brakes?

So I greased up my front U-Joints and the one at the rear of the trans. The pulsating feel is gone and the low end vibes but my roto flex is REALLY banged up and now the vibes over 50 are a little worse than they used to be. This will QUICKLY be replaced with a new drive shaft with a U-joint to the rear diff.

Don't knock the old rotoflex, they doe a good job for what they were designed for and as long as you stay under a 3" lift a new rotoflex for $50ish is not a bad way to go. You might also throw some zerks on the slip shafts of both of your drive lines and lube them also, helps with the Klunks.

I have seen them as old as on my mom's 86' Benz 420 SEL. Same one as mine from what I could tell.

there are some later model D1s (97s, 98s, 99s) with U-joints...could be a dependant on the trim level, maybe?

I saw on the 70's RRC in the other thread "Is it worth it?", that the rear drive shaft had just U-Joints, no rubber rotoflex.

You're totally right man! And it might even be cheaper to keep the rotoflex because you can keep a spare in the truck! Ah man..lol...sometimes I just act without thinking.

My truck has vibes at about 60-65 MPH I'm getting a new rotoflex until I can get enough money to do a u-joint conversion. For some strange reason my GF gets a kick out it when the Disco vibrates

So I've changed my RotoFlex to a Genuine one from DAP. While doing the job, I went ahead and lubed everything that had a grease nipple on it. The low speed vibes have been gone for a while now. But ever since I changed the rotoflex, ive had really pulsating vibes between 65 and 75 mph.

When doing the job, I couldn't find a comfortable enough position in order to torque and read the wrench. Because of this, I tightened them more than I was suppose to. Could over-tightened bolts be the culprit to the pulsating?

That's what I do. They are super quick to swap out. Much easier than trying to repair a U-Joint in the field. It's also pretty simple to see when they are damanged,,just a visual inspection.

However-- this can get expensive in the long run.
