DunkinGoinNuts! - Land Rovers Only

This driving me up the wall and I cant see whats causing it.

Nearly every time I accelerate, brake, turn sharp right or sharp left there is a really annoying DUNK sound coming from the back end of my 94 300tdi disco.
It appears that all the suspension bushes and exhaust mounts are intact and in good order and there is nothing rolling around in the rear footwells or in the boot (the trunk to our chums across the pond) so what the hell is it?

Any ideas, im all ears.

Suspension or shock bushings, have you checked them yet?

Is this a new sound or has it gotten louder? Does this sound occcur in third gear as well?

all shock bushing appear intact and serviceable. this started about two weeks ago (700 miles maybe) got progressively louder until yesterday but now its calmed down again, although its definately still audible.

it occurs in first gear always, second if im pulling away quite quickly but ive never heard it in third.

also, after using it in a field yesterday, i notice that it occurs when bouncing over bumps.

any ideas yet?

While there are many parts that can make clunks, such as U-joints, driveshaft slip joints, etc, I suspect the noise is most likely a suspension bushing. While the truck is sitting on the ground, you can grab any part and shake the crap out of it without reproducing the sound, or, actually, the movement making the sound. When you're driving, the forces are significantly greater than you can produce by hand, especially considering that almost all the componants have a bushing at two ends, and only one may be bad.. First thing is to get it up on a frame lift, taking the body weight off the suspension and suspended members.

After having a really, really good prod, poke and general tidy up underneath the back end I seem to have inadvertantly cured it.

Now ive written this it´ll probably start knocking again now.
