Default Engine Questions

Thanks to Disco Mike for the help on identifying my disco. I thought i got a disco II, but i actually bought a disco 1... For 4,500. 90k miles

Anyway. I like it, its fun offroad, but gutless. I have questions on those who have done forced induction, i've read around the forums etc, but still looking for some info.

My Q's

1.) Anyone turbo'd a petrol disco?
2.) Anyone replaced head studs with Arp fasteners with a FI (forced induction) setup ?
3.) Other than fitting an intercooler and proper fuel, are there other things to worry about with forced induction?

Here are my current ideas, i've done lots of forced induction.. But anyway, I plan to install a hybrid T3/t4 turbo right after the first muffler (yes, BELOW the car) and use a sump to move oil from the turbo back to engine. (most likely use a banjo barb off the oil cooler hose up front for the feed line.) and use an intercooler (perhaps liquid to air, who knows) and run boost at around 5 or 6 psi. I'll be using a supplimental injection controller and mount two extra injectors on the intake manifold.

As far as longevity, i'd be expecting it to last at least 30,000 miles before it needs new rings or pistons. is this an unfair expectation?

Currently i just gutted the cats (i hate them damn cats) and done secondary 02 mods to keep the ecu happy.

I'm planning to map out the turbo setup to see full boost at 1500-1700 RPM.

Also, anyone here done LPG or Natual gas conversions on their Disco?

Btw, money isn't an issue on this stuff, but i love to tinker here is a history of turbo cars i've owned/modified

2 X Isusu Impulse turbos. Rally cars (HY35 turbo on one t3/t04e turbo on other)
1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse awd (Big 16G turbo Afc intercooler exhaust, cams porting)
1996 toyota supra with a single turbo conversion (custom turbo)
1999 Nissan Skyline Twin turbo (boost mods, intercooler exhaust mods etc)

I've sold everything listed above.

for now i have my disco and a lil older mercedes benz

So i have some experience with forced induction, i'm keen to common problems, but i would like to hear from people who have ventured down this alley.

my time frame is a month or so i would be keen to do more suspension tire mods at the same time (probably pay someone to do that stuff no exp. there)

Thanks!

Regards,

Brad

Hi-o fellow DSMer! What is the compression on it? What is the service level? How close that is will determine length. That will be a wicked turbo, but I would opt for a top mount twin ball bearing turbo setup myself. In any event, if you can find the right studs, hell yes its a good idea! There is no way in hell the stockers will come close to the ARP units by comparison. You will need them. Also see if you can get a layered metal head gasket and/or get it copper ringed at the top of the block around the cylinders so it will seal tightly. I can find the link if you need it, its a little extra, but 800+HP cars are using them, and the people who put them in swear by them and would have it no other way. I would get the ARP rod bolts too if you can. An intercooler is a must, but not too big for that low psi. The pressure drop would kinda stink. you will need the fuel pump, plus injectors...even bigger injectors for the "corn fuel" I don't like the stuff. I recommend water injection also. I don't know that it would be necessary to put in any extra ones if you have a controller though. Plus you will need a few other small fuel related items, but they are available. I wonder what my truck would be like turbo-charged. Sounds like fun! I see you had a GTR, was it R33 in 99' I so would love to get an R32 one day. What did you think of the 99'?

Nissan Skyline...... mm, it was fun to drift, but the supra was better.

For this setup i want it to be MILD. i dont want a race car (or need it) but i would like a big performance boost on the cheap.

I want to run 5-6 lbs only! not more, i dont want to break stuff

I plan on using a special programmable supplimental injection controller with two additional injectors, the fuel pump should have enough flow for 2 additional injectors.

I will most likely use a liquid to air intercooler, so i can eliminate wasted piping.

and i want full boost between 1500-1700 rpms. I dont want to have to rev the engine over 3500. Ever. (its a waste on this engine anyway, no power up there)

Actually, GM used to turbo these engines before Rover bought them, at least when they were low compression 3.5 engines.

There is a guy on this forum that turboed his disco. He is from New South Wales here in OZ. Just can't remember is User ID. But if you do a search you should find pictures of his set-up in past posts.

Found the posts. His user ID was Disco and he supercharged it, rather than Turbo. Info is in these threads.
discovery series I with a series II engine
Super Charger on a Disco1 or Classic?
But the easiest way to get more power is simply fit a bigger V8. Chev V8's fit relatively easily.

It may be a possibility.. but i'm more into the do very little and get big results. Pulling engines isn't my favorite thing to do.

Has anyone done a chev v8 swap?

Not uncommon. They have been occurring for 20 years. Marks Adaptors here in Oz makes a conversion kit.

Hmm. An engine IS cheaper than a turbo kit .....

Do you have a link to the conversion kits?
