Expedition Roof Rack - Land Rovers Only

Just thought I would throw this one out there.

A buddy and me are thinking of forming a small company to manufacture an expedition type roof rack similar to the original Land Rover expedition rack but at a fraction of the price, probably around the $650 mark.

I have cut and pasted some info from a draft flyer. Any interest out there?

The Antero Roof Rack for the Land Rover Discovery is built from strong 16 gauge, 1” diameter steel tube, MIG welded, with a tough powder coat finish. This roof rack will give years of dependable use.

Designed and manufactured to be a practical and sturdy load carrier, the Antero Roof Rack is styled to follow the classic rooflines of the Land Rover Discovery.

Two versions are available, a low profile model for use when the original factory roof rack has been removed, and a regular model which allows mounting over the original factory 3 bar roof rack. Both offer almost 30 square feet of storage space. Compare the price and features of the Antero Roof Rack with similar roof racks, we are sure you will be impressed with the value for money.

Attachment is by 8 gutter mounts, together they spread the load over a wider area, compared with other systems that have only 4 or 6 mounting points.

The side rails are 6” deep, compared with only 4” on some other models. This allows for greater load stability.

In addition to the standard 4 front and 2 rear lamp mounts, the Antero Roof Rack can be supplied with attachments for a Hi-Lift Jack mount, spare wheel carrier, jerry can mounts, CB antennae and sand rail mounts. A powder coated aluminum diamond plate floor is available. Limb riser attachments are also available.

All the attachments are unique to the rack I will be building, I don't have access to an original exped' rack, so I don't know if they will fit. What diameter is the tubing on the original? if it is 1" od then there is a chance. Which attachment are you thinking about?

John, the tubing looks to be 1" OD. We shoot video from the top on the rack with a custom column from Australia. I need some sort of floor to set up and move around on and haven't found the right piece yet. Needs to be light, strong and not slippery under foot.

Nice idea. I've thought it can be too hard to put one together myself.

You might want to check this site out: www.northwestparts.com. I bought their DII rack and ladder about 2 months ago. They make a nice rack and have similar attachments/options. The tubing diameter on the ladder matches the rack (as opposed to some ladders I've seen around town that look like thinner tubing).

I just wish they made limb risers that work for parking garages!
