Default Flywheel question

95 Disco w/ lots o miles, 183k plus.

I bought this thing in April 05. The p.o. did some "work", on the engine, to solve a "tapping" noise...fixed. Two months into my ownership, the "tapping" returned. Diagnosed as a loose flywheel...fixed. Five to six months later, the friggin thing is loose again! WTF!

What could be causing this problem to occur three times? Is something bent or not installed properly, causing it to work loose? Is there anyway to tighten without opening the t****y? Please help my Obi-one, you're my only hope!

Ron,
I don't think I have ever heard of a fly wheel coming loose, much less 3 times.
Is it a fly wheel like for a 5 speed or a flexplate for an automatic?

I had the toothed ring that is riveted to the flex plate come loose on one of my Discos. At first it sounded like a bad cat or heat shield until a couple of rivets gave way and the entire ring separated from the plate. The crank sensor failed and the truck wouldn't move. Otherwise, lioke DiscoMike, I've never heard of a flex plate or fly wheel come loose.

Where's the noise coming from? The engine or the bell housing?

Hmm, I thought the flywheel is what I was told...anyway, Paul described it best. They showed me the elongated holes in the "toothed" wheel as well as the Allen head screws that were damaged. Maybe I've confused the terminology.

Mine is an auto so I guess its a flexplate I'm no mechanic. Since I "know" what is was last time, I know where the noise is; the bell housing. You can even feel a little tapping on the t***** side and not the engine side.

Just really curious as to why this would happen twice to me and possibly once to the p.o.

Thanks guys

It is not common , but does happen, usually not 3 times though.
If you have cracked the flex plate, you need to have a good mechanic inspect it to determine what is causing the problem.
So I would suggest you pull the transmission and have it inspected, you will need to anyway cause it will fail and can cause additional damage.
Let us know what they find.

I thought you'd say that. That'll have to wait til Dec though. When I do, I'm pulling everything, give it a good overhaul; rings, cam and whatever anybody can recommend, within my budget that is. I'm giving this thing new life.
