I have a 1996 Discovery, and i believe my check engine light is burnt out. I've never seen it turn on, and when i used my scan tool, it came up with 2 errors. How easy is it to replace, and is there any good site that has like a tutorial on how to do it with pictures and stuff?
In addition, the "service engine" light is on, and from what i read that is just Land Rover wanting me to go in and give them my money. Does anyone know how to turn that light off, or if it is something to look into more? |

When I got my 95 D1, the SRS lights did not light. Unfortunately I had to get tehm working in order to pass the safety check. On a hunch, I pulled the cluster and found that the lights had been removed. I soldered some new lights, reinstalled the cluster and the lights came on, and stayed on. I had to go to the dealer to get the SRS reset.
As for the Service Engine Soon light, there should be a small box under the passenger seat. At the top of the box is a hole (may be covered with the sticker). Just insert a non-metallic stick into the hole and reset the clock. It comes on every 50,000 miles (or something like that). All this is for my 95, but I think it is probably the same for yours. Good Luck, Denis 95 D1 |

Actually, getting at the instrument cluster is a pretty easy job (comparatively), thus, you probably won't find anything online (though I admit that I have not looked). The workshop manual is actually quite accurate and helpful. I also own the Haynes manual, but the WM was sufficient, so I couldn't say anything about how helpful the HM is...
I'm not sure how my '95 stacks up to your '96, but if they're anything alike, you need to remove the binnacle (may require the removal of the steering wheel - there's a safety procedure for the SRS that I don't deal with, careful), which gives you access to the cluster. If memory serves, there are 4 screws that hold the cluster to the dash - turn the cluster around and you have access to the lights... Let us know how it goes. Cheers,
