Ok , so old news, but I am using approx 20 ltrs of gas to do 100 kms of driving.....(96 4.0 v8)

Any comments, apart from you need new o2 sensors, plus what economy are you getting.......lets hear it ..

Need more information then that, how many miles, what sort of service ahs you done on it, what gas?????

Its obvious you have a problem. Due you have any check engine lites on.

Do you idle alot.

Do you get stuck in traffic alot.

Now before you measure out what you are getting. measure out completely over an entire tank. just in case if the sender is bad.

Before you throw a myriad of parts at it. look at the obvious ones first. what kind of air pressure are you running. Also conditions of air filter. Dirty air filter gets less gas mileage.

actually 100k is 62.5 miles
and 20litres is 5.2 us gallons
so it's actually about 12 mpg, which is not so excessively low, although if you have no mods I would have thought 15 would be more reasonable.

On a UK D3/LR3 board I couldn't believe the mileage they were getting.. until I found out a UK gallon is bigger than a US gallon. Ooops.

I get 11ish US MPG in my lifted roof-racked and big tire D1 and I get 14 in my D3/LR3.

Lots of things can reduce MPG/ LPK (is that a correct term?).......or a combination of them for that matter.

You mentioned O2s and others hit on tire pressure, air filter and extra weight from mods. I'll add to that low fuel pressure &/or out of speck fuel injectors......oh yea, and a heavy foot.






The Rover V8 doesn't help matters either.........

I have a '95 V8 5-speed with 124,000 km (77,000 mi):

On the highway, I'm getting around 500 km from a tank of gas when I buy 91 octane (a bit less on the cheap stuff). In the city, it drops to about 400 km. Given that I fill up on about 85 Liters (when I let it go that low), that gives me about 5.8 KpL highway and 4.7 KpL city.

For those of you who are metric-challenged, it works out to about 14 mpg (US gallon) highway and 11 mpg in the city.

The conversion factor from KpL to mpg is 2.352 (that is, 1 KpL is 2.352 mpg).

In the last 6 months I have replaced the fuel pump and filter, the alternator, and the battery. I'm going to run a couple more tanks with the current plugs and the OEM, 10-year-old wires and coil before switching to a new MSD Blaster coil (#8222, high vibration), magnacor 8mm wires and Bosch Plat 4 plugs - I'm hoping to see a material improvement in fuel consumption (with our V8s, we really can't use the term "fuel efficiency", now can we? ).

I join John on the O2 sensor inquiry: should I replace my sensors now (is 14 mpg low?) or would that be a waste of money (Dude, be happy with the mpg you've got!).

I have a 96 with a 5-speed. I do a lot of driving, good mix of city/highway and I usually average about 15 MPG plus or minus a little. One major thing I notice is if you keep your foot out of the radiator on the freeway I've gotten as much as 18 out of it, but you have to not exceed 65 MPH to do this. If I put the roof rack my mileage drops about 8-10%. I leave it off unless I'm going on a trip where I need it.

Just a heads up on the Bosch Plat 4 plugs, they've been known to cause problems in the GEMS & earlier Rover V8s. My experience was some random misfires w/ a new set that immediately went away when some new Champions replaced them. I'm not the only one.......there's some extensive threads on this over @ Dweb w/ some sealership techs chiming in w/ a thumbs down on Bosch.

Of course I'm sure there are some who will swear by them..............

One thing that no one has mentioned is the fact that DI's have a tendency to have a poorly calibrated odometer. I know mine is messed up I've heard others have the same problems, either because of the factory tire sizes or just bad parts. I think that 15 mpg highway should be about normal though for a DI.

P.S. The platinum 4s have been the topic of much discussion on this board and I'm quite convinced that they are bad news from what I've read.

Yeah, my figure was based on GPS. But you're right, most people don't think about 'dat!

I get about 12-13 city miles, and 14-15 mpg freeway miles. It's alright, just wish gas prices won't continue to rise.

Cool, I thought I might have a problem too, but I'm right in there with everyone else. Lifted w/ roof rack and combined highway and city, I get between 11.5-12 mpg.=

Don't do the Bosch Plat. Not that they're a bad product, they just don't work on Rovers.

That would be me! I put them in around 65K miles 3 years ago and I'm now close to 150K miles. No problems and she runs great! It is a '96 D1. In fact, a retired LR underwriter recommended I do it, along with Magnecore 8mm plug wires...

Another fuel economy factor is whether you live on the plains, or in the Rockies.
